Recreating Currency of the Ages With a 3d Printed Stamp Kit and Multiple Designs.

I’ve always been fascinated by the history of ancient civilizations. One theme that consistently appears across different cultures and eras is the use of currency—both social and economic—in the form of coins and seals. These objects were not only tools of trade but also symbols of power, identity, and communication.
In this Instructable, I am hence focusing on the Middle ages and Renaissance.
Coins served as a prevalent means of transferring wealth—whether between individuals or larger groups—and were often used to convey the authority and influence of a ruler, dynasty, or state. Details such as the material used, the craftsmanship, the imagery or inscriptions, and even the techniques employed in their production could reflect the prosperity, cultural richness, or even the struggles of a particular kingdom.
This deep symbolism and historical significance inspired me to recreate coins and seals from various kingdoms of the ancient and medieval periods across the world. My goal is to help people of the 21st century experience a small, tangible piece of history. The first time I held a replica I made, it genuinely felt like I had been transported back in time.
This project is an open-source initiative aimed at creating a repository of clay-based coin and seal replicas, using modern tools like 3D printing to craft stamp holders and molds. Through this method, anyone can reproduce these historical artifacts in a hands-on, creative, and educational way—whether for learning, collecting, or simply appreciating the artistic and historical legacy of the past.

3D Models Design Time

Then I started with the design of these models, for this, I have used the Fusion 360 Software and Blender softwares, you can use any CAD software of your choice. First I collected images of each coin, then converted those into SVG files using online converters. Then I imported the SVG files in Fusion 360 to sketch and extrude our designs.
3D Printing Stamp Holder and Mods

Next I 3d Printed the stamps on my 3d printer and did some post processing to use the designs for making coins.
Easily Swapable Design

I have also designed this stamp holder and replacement mechanism to easily replace different molds and easy coin making.
Processing Clay

Then I processed the clay to shape and mould on the coins.
Stamping on the Clay

I used the stamp holder to print on the clay using different molds.
Painting Time

Then I painted all the coins using acrylic colors
Adding Details

I further added details for giving an oldish look to the coins
