Recharge Your Vehicle A/C

Overview:

In this instructable I will show you how to recharge your vehicle A/C so it blows cool air. Your A/C may not be blowing any cold air or may just need a boost. This process will help you in either situation. The recharge kits cost around $35 and can save you around $100 compared to the local mechanic. If your vehicle doesn't blow any air, this process will not help you.

Most auto part stores will have a selection of a few kits, some with sealants and other "special" ingredients. I buy the standard R134A refrigerant because I am a bit wary of all the additives. It has worked great for me so far but I'm sure any kit will suite you well.

This step is probably the hardest and most crucial.

Don't Worry

The goal of this step is to find which port on your compressor is the "High Pressure" and which is the "Low Pressure." We will be our A/C Recharge to the "Low Pressure" port.

If you aren't too inclined under the hood, here are my 3 best options for being sure of your ports:

1. Ask the mechanics at the auto part store.

2. Look it up in a repair manual like "Haynes".

3. Find a online auto forum and ask the community.

• Your low pressure port is on the tubing going between the compressor and evaporator. It is almost always right next to the firewall. (On my truck it is tucked back on the right side of the compressor.)

• Turn engine on
• Turn A/C and fans to "High" and "Coldest" setting. (Should hear the compressor run)
• connect the A/C Recharge kit to the "Low Pressure" port. (You should hear a click)
• Adjust gauge depending on temperature. (This is a safety feature. Pressure increases with temperature and you don't want your system to blow.)
• Recharge A/C until in "Green" area or around 35PS

• Check air temperature in vents. (Should be around 50 degrees)
• Close Window's and enjoy!
