Real Measuring Spoons

Being that I love making new handles for all sorts of things I thought it would be a great pun to make new handles for my measuring spoons from real rulers. It's really easy to do and you probably already have most everything on hand already. Everyone seems to have one of those old fold-out rulers lying around. They're not that practical but they're so retro-cool.

Supplies

  • one of those old fold-out rulers
  • measuring spoon(s)
  • sandpaper
  • jeweler's saw or hacksaw
  • clamp
  • drill, drill bit
  • pop rivets and rivet gun
  • maybe some masking tape
  • some varnish or polyurethane

Cut and Sand

One day I want to make an instructable that I don't have to write anything - that the steps will be obvious from the photos. I think a lot of us read these the way we read recipes - sort of making the projects in our heads. Anyway, you will find your own measuring spoons and make the appropriate holes and measure the ruler the appropriate length.

Cut your ruler to the right length - that would be the length you would like your measuring spoon to be, and sand the edges nice and smooth. This would be a great time to spray or coat that ruler with some varnish instead of waiting until the spoon was all finished and you had to cover the spoon with masking tape.

Drill Holes

Drill the right size hole for the pop rivets you are using. You really can't get away with one hole - you have to make two. If you only make one hole the spoon will pivot out from the handle at some point.

In the above photo I'm using a drill press but that's only because I have one. A regular drill will be just fine. Be sure to clamp both sides of the ruler together.

Rivets

Insert rivets, and using your riveter sandwich the spoon inside the rulers with those cool rivets. Yes, it is that easy. It's not a knife that would be undergoing lots of force - it's just a measuring spoon. Pop rivets will be fine.

Done!

The photo shows some other handles I've made to give you more ideas. The one with a chain is called a Dieter's Spoon because it's so hard to pick up and eat anything with it.
