Reading Aid D4E1
Katja likes to read in her spare time. It’s mostly focused on books and no magazines. Because of her muscle disease it wasn’t possible to read. She has fibromyalgia and spasmophilia. Fibromyalgia is a chronic muscle pain disease which is mainly associated with muscle pain and stiffness. Since she reads in a lying position, it is difficult for her to hold the book for a long time. It requires a lot of effort for her, which makes her less motivated to read. For this she used various universal tools such as a reading pillow, which she placed on her stomach. Here the reading direction was not optimal and when turning a page she had to tighten and relax each time. Which was very tiring for her muscles.
Our assignment as students is to design a tool that meets Katja's requirements. For Katja, it was important that the aid is adjustable and removable to include on travel. In the future she would like to use an e-reader, which we included in our design. The flexibility of the device makes it possible to completely relax her muscles, allowing her to adopt a comfortable posture.
You can place various books on the metal board. By means of different formats of clips it is possible to efficiently clamp the book into it. Thanks to this tool, Katja can enjoy reading again.

Cutting the Pipes on Length
Cut your pipes on the right length we used the following measurements
2x 620 mm
1 x 1000mm
1x 700 mm
Drilling the Attachement Holes
1 Draw diagonals across your steel plate so you know the center
2 Place the connection piece in the middle
3 Mark the holes
4 Drill your holes Ø8.5
Painting the Plate or (and) Connection Pieces
Choose a color you prefer and paint the connection pieces and steel plate to give it that little extra. Let it dry and you're ready for the next step.
Montage Plate & Connection
Push the Bolds through the plate and put the nuts on and your ready to go.
Montage Lower Part
Montage is quite easy just put the pipes in the connection pieces and tighten the nuts.
Montage Middle Part
Put the longest pipe through the connection.
Montage Connection and Plate
1- Put the connection piece on the vertical pipe and tighten the bold
2- Put through the 700 mm pipe and tighten the bold again
