Rainbow Ends Crochet Scarf

I wanted to make a rainbow ends crochet scarf for a while but wasn't sure what to do about the pattern. After keeping my eyes open I came across this Windowpane Scarf and decided to alter the pattern a bit to make it work for what I wanted to create!

This pattern felt a lot more confusing to write up and explain than it did to crochet, so if something doesn't make sense, please comment and let me know.

Supplies:

• I/9 5.55mm Crochet Hook
• Size 4 Medium weight Yarn - I'm using mostly Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink and a medium Grey
• Yarn Needle
• Measuring Tape

I'm going to go through the pattern step by step, but here is a write up of the whole pattern.

Decide how wide you want your scarf. The pattern should be a multiple of 6 + 5. So 17st, 23st, or 19sts for example.

Your scarf can really be knit as long as you want but mine is 61" with the grey body being about 44" and each end about 8.5" each. It was about 5.5" wide.

I would have made mine longer but I was using up grey and that was just as much as I could crochet before I ran out of yarn.

COLOR 1:

Row 1: Start with a Chain 23 and single crochet going back so you have 23 stitches

OR

Do a Single Crochet Base Chain

Row 2: Ch. 4 (this is your first Tr), Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in last 4 stitches of the row.

Row 3: Single Crochet across, change to next color in last stitch.

COLOR 2:

Row 1: Single Crochet across

Row 2: Ch. 7 (this is your first Tr and Ch. 3 together), skip first 3 stitches, Tr. in 4th stitch in (this should be above the hole below in red), Tr. in next 2 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in last stitch.

Row 3: Single Crochet across, change to the next color in the last stitch.

Continue with your different colors alternating between the color 1 pattern and color 2 pattern until you have used all your colors. For me I finished on COLOR 1 pattern with Pink.

Red COLOR 1, Orange COLOR 2, Yellow COLOR 1, Green COLOR 2, Blue COLOR 1, Purple COLOR 2, Pink COLOR 1.

Once you have finished all the colors and are ready to switch to the scarf body color (for me that's grey)

BODY OF SCARF COLOR

Row 1: Single Crochet across

(Do the row 2 above that alternates whatever the pattern was with your last color. For me my last color (pink's) row was COLOR 1, for for the first row of Grey it was the COLOR 2 pattern.)

Row 2: Ch. 7 (this is your first Tr and Ch. 3 together), skip first 3 stitches, Tr. in 4th stitch in (this should be above the hole below in red), Tr. in next 2 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in last stitch.

Row 3: Single Crochet across.

(Again, this will be the alternate COLOR row 2 from above.)

Row 4: Ch. 4 (this is your first Tr), Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in last 4 stitches of the row.

Row 5: Single Crochet across.

Repeat rows 2 - 5 until the scarf is almost as long as you want keeping in mind you will be repeating the colors again.

Once you have finished the body of the scarf you are ready to switch to the colors again to finish the scarf

Start with the last color you did on the other end, for me that is Pink. You are going to do the same patterns as before, so for me I did the same Pink rows that I did last time.

COLOR 1:
Row 1: Single Crochet across

Row 2: Ch. 4 (this is your first Tr), Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in last 4 stitches of the row.

Row 3: Single Crochet across, change to next color in last stitch.

COLOR 2:

Row 1: Single Crochet across

Row 2: Ch. 7 (this is your first Tr and Ch. 3 together), skip first 3 stitches, Tr. in 4th stitch in (this should be above the hole below in red), Tr. in next 2 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in last stitch.

Row 3: Single Crochet across, change to the next color in the last stitch.

Repeat alternating between COLOR 1 and COLOR 2. When you are done, you are just done. You will end on a single crochet row of your last color.

Some abbreviations:

Ch: Chain

Tr: Triple Crochet / Treble Crochet

Change to your second color.

• Single crochet across. Turn your work

• Chain Chain 7 (this is your first Tr and Ch. 3 together) skip first 3 stitches
• Tr. in 4th stitch in (this should be above the hole below in red) and Tr. in next 2 stitches
• Chain 3, skip next 3 stitches
• Tr. in next 3 stitches
• Chain 3, skip next 3 stitches
• Tr. in next 3 stitches
• Chain 3, skip next 3 stitches
• Tr. in last stitch

You should have what you see in the 3rd picture above: a piece that starts and ends with 1 Tr and has 4 holes.

Turn your work and Single Crochet across, change to the next color in the last stitch.

Now it's time to repeat and alternate your COLOR 1 and COLOR 2 patterns until you have done all your colors. If you do an odd number of colors like me, you will end with COLOR 1.

Once your colors are done, it is time to switch to the body of the scarf. It's only slightly different than the ends in that you will be doing just 1 single crochet row between funky rows.

(I am going to write this as if you ended on COLOR 1 like me, but if not, you want to alternate that funky row to make sure your pattern works out.)

Row 1: Single Crochet across.

Row 2: Ch. 7 (this is your first Tr and Ch. 3 together), skip first 3 stitches, Tr. in 4th stitch in (this should be above the hole below in red), Tr. in next 2 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in last stitch.

Row 3: Single Crochet across.

Row 4: Ch. 4 (this is your first Tr), Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in last 4 stitches of the row.

Row 5: Single Crochet across.

Repeat rows 2 - 5 until the scarf is almost as long as you want keeping in mind you will be repeating the colors again.

Then you want to end on the funky row that will alternate the color row so since I know my Pink color row will be COLOR 1, I made sure the last funky row for gray was COLOR 2's pattern or Row 2 above.

Now you just have to finish up the scarf by reverse alternating your colors. I will, again, give directs as if you are using the same number of colors as me.

COLOR 1: (this should be the last color you used before, for me it's pink)

Row 1: Single Crochet across

Row 2: Ch. 4 (this is your first Tr), Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr in last 4 stitches of the row.

Row 3: Single Crochet across, change to next color in last stitch.

COLOR 2: (again, repeating my pattern in reverse, this was purple)

Row 1: Single Crochet across

Row 2: Ch. 7 (this is your first Tr and Ch. 3 together), skip first 3 stitches, Tr. in 4th stitch in (this should be above the hole below in red), Tr. in next 2 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in next 3 stitches, Ch. 3, skip next 3 stitches, Tr. in last stitch.

Row 3: Single Crochet across, change to the next color in the last stitch.

Repeat alternating between COLOR 1 and COLOR 2. When you are done, you are just done. You will end on a single crochet row of your last color.

So for the rest of my pattern it went Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red.

Weave in and trim all your ends and you'll be ready to add the fringe.

You don't have to put on a fridge, but I feel like this pattern really needs it to feel finished.

Take a piece of pink (I know I have red but I changed how many I was going to do and changed it later, just pretend) yarn and grey yarn that are about 8.5" (or as long as you want).

Put these pieces together and fold them in half.

Pull the loop through the center of the end of your scarf.

Once you pull the loop through, reach through the loop with your hook and pull the ends.

Now repeat this for each fringe, one of a color and one of the scarf body color.

Because of the colors I used I ended up having the following pattern for the fringe: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink, Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red.
