Rainbow Chevron Bracelet Made on the Square Kumihimo Disk
I've been getting into Kumihimo - the Japanese art of braiding recently. I've made up this pattern for a rainbow chevron flat braid.
Supplies
8 colours of 3mm rattail satin - 100cm of each
Kumihimo square disk - buy one or follow my instructable to make your own
Glue
Ruler
Tape
Thread
Fastening - I'm using an 10mm magnetic barrel clasp
Cut Rattail Satin Lengths and Tie
Cut 100cm lengths of each of your 8 colours of rattail satin.
I'm using red, orange, yellow-green, green, light blue, dark blue, purple and silver - rainbow colours + silver for the clouds.
Fold in half and tie in the middle using a spare bit of cord.
Set Up Your Kumihimo Disk
Poke the tied middle through the hole in the centre of your kumihimo disk.
Set up the coloured cords as shown in the image.
Silver in 4 and 7
Purple in 5 and 6
Light blue in 15 and 17
Dark blue in 15 and 16
Orange in D and d
Green in E and e
Yellow-green in F and f
Red in G and g
Braiding Step 1 - Top
Take the cord from 6 and move it to H
Then take the cord from 5 and move it to h
You should now have the same as the photo
Braiding Step 2 - Bottom
Now we do a similar move for the bottom cords.
Take 16 and move it to C
The take 15 and move it to c
You should now have the same as the photo
Reposition Top and Bottom
Now reposition your top and bottom cords into the centre slots.
4 to 5 and 7 to 6
14 to 15 and 17 to 16
You should now have the same as the photo
Braiding Step 3 - Left Side
Now we're going to work with the cords on the left side.
Move E to 14 then F to 4
You should now have the same as the photo
Braiding Step 5 - Right Side
Now for the cords on the right side.
Move e to 17 then f to 7
You should now have the same as the photo
Reposition Sides
Now reposition each side back to the centre slots.
d to e and c to d
g to f and h to g
D to E and C to D
G to F and H to G
Repeat Repeat Repeat
OK - that's one complete sequence.
Now just repeat until you get to the end of your cords.
Here is the complete sequence to follow:
6 to H, 5 to h
16 to C, 15 to c
Reposition top and bottom (4 to 5, 7 to 6, 14 to 15, 17 to 16)
E to 14, F to 4
e to 17 , f to 7
Reposition sides (d to e, c to d ; g to f, h to g ; D to E, C to D ; G to F, H to G)
Remove From Disk and Tape End
Carefully remove the ends of the cords from your kumihimo disc, gather together and secure with some tape.
Bind and Glue Before Cutting
Tie some thread round your braid and add glue over the top. This is to secure the braid before we cut it.
Wait for the glue to dry before cutting
Measure Your Bracelet
Check your wrist size and measure the length you want the bracelet to be.
Bind and glue the second end at the correct length.
Cut the Ends and Prepare for Adding Your Clasp
Cut the ends at the point just beyond where you have bound and glued the ends.
I'm using a magnetic barrel clasp for this bracelet so separate the ends and position ready to glue..
Glue on Your Clasp
Put some glue inside the clasp then push onto the end of your kumihimo braid.
Do this for both end then leave to dry.
Ready to Wear
Now your rainbow kumihimo bracelet is ready to wear.
Enjoy!
