What's your favorite kind of rainbow candy? Show it off in style with this fun and colorful makeup bag! Whether it's gummy worms, gummy bears, M&M's, or Skittles, you'll learn all the colors of the rainbow with this unique sewing project!

Note: This project also works great for kids who are just starting out in machine sewing, and this would be a great beginner project for that important learning skill!

Materials

Here's what you will need to make your own colorful candy makeup bag:

  • sewing machine
  • thread
  • felt
  • copies of candy images printed on fabric paper
  • scissors
  • zippers (at least 10 inches)

Prep Images

First, go to your computer and pick out pictures of your favorite types of rainbow candy. Then, print them out on fabric paper.

Prep Felt

Next, peel the fabric paper off and lay it face down on your work surface. Then, place a sheet of felt on top of the sticky side of the fabric sheet, and fold the edges inward. The felt will serve as your lining for your makeup bags. Then, fold the fabric in half, and cut along the crease, so you will have two pieces.

Add Zipper

From there, fold the top part of one of the fabric sheets 1/4" inward, and sew it on top of one side of the zipper using a straight stitch and a zipper foot (you can also use an all-purpose foot as well). Repeat the same step for the second fabric piece and sew that on the other side of the zipper. Make sure that the zipper is facing up.

Finish Off

If your zipper is long, cut off the bottom part of the zipper only, and unzip the zipper halfway through the middle. Then, to finish off, fold the fabric sheet over so that it looks inside out. Make sure that the fabric pieces are even with one another. Then, using your straight stitch, sew all the way around the bag, making sure to sew over the zipper as well.

Turn Right Side Out

Finally, turn the bag right outside, fluff it out if you need to, and there's your makeup bag! You can also add a matching ribbon on the zipper for a ribbon pull. I didn't do that part, but that's optional!

Delicious Bags!

The candy images that I used for my makeup bags are Gummy Bears, Sour Worms, and M&Ms! These make great gifts for true blue candy lovers!
