Rainbow Bedroom
Hi! My name is Anna Zhang.
I am a high schooler who likes to DIY all kinds of interesting decorations and architecture models. I am entering this competition to mainly kill some time during the summer break and hopefully get some thumbs up from those of you who also like crafting. I believe that this can also provide me with some more architecture model-building experience for the future.
It always makes me happy and forget about other things in my life when I am working on this project. My intention is to always be creative and go with my heart. I am presenting to you my project called Rainbow Bedroom.
I hope this miniature bedroom will RAINBOW you lots of happiness. And it looks pretty awesome, isn't it? 🌈

**Although it's a lot of materials, almost everything can be found at home and are being reused. You can make adjustments based on different materials you can find, especially like paint, paper and fabrics. ❤️
Design
Designing Process:
- First, I need to decide the scale. The room doesn't need to be too big. I want it to be cute and delicate so the scale will be 25cm x 15cm x 12cm. I choose to make a rectangle room with an open top and an open front wall so that they won't block anything inside but still leaves a great amount of space to show what it looks like.
- Then I start to sketch ideas on paper. A table...a bed...a window...shelves...plants...chairs...until I have a rough draft for myself to come back to later (image shown on top). It's certainly not perfect, but it gives me a clear visual representation of the bedroom. I change up some of the details for better fits along the way as I build the room.
Dimensions
Dimensions:
- I sketch the walls and floors on the paper based on the scales I mentioned before. I end up with a floor plan and two interior wall designs. The dimensions of the furniture are estimated based on the sketch in the previous step. And very furniture I am making later will be based off this sketch. But these are only the hardware in this bedroom so decorations are not included.
Walls and Floors
Walls and Floors:
- Use cardboard from Amazon deliveries and cut them into rectangles based off the dimensions. Leave out a hole on one of the walls. Stick the rainbow wallpapers and floor tiles onto their respective positions.
Windows and Furniture
Windows:
- Cut out a cardboard for window frame, paint it white then add blue stripes. Use the plastic garbage bag to make transparent windows. This layer will go between the wall and the frame. Glue them onto the wall using hot glue gun.
- Use metal thread and clay to make a curtain rod. I made two curling ends on both sides. Then I bend the metal thread into an "L" shape for support so it can stick out to create a more 3D look. Use clay to make a joint, paint it yellow.
- Use thick black fabric with sequins to make curtains. Cut two rectangles and bend them into wavy shape for the body part. Since it is hard to keep them in shape, I used two small nails at the bottom to fix them across the folds. Cut two thin strips and wrap them around the middle of the curtains to create a tied-up look. Then use hot glue gun to stick them onto the curtain rod to create an illusion of hanging.
Mattress:
- Three mattresses are made out of microfiber fabrics. They are cut into circles and glued onto the floor.
Bed:
- Use cardboard to make a box for the bedframe.
- For the bedsheet, cut out a rectangle a few centimeters larger than the box using spotted fabric. Cut out another 4 centimeters wide strip and sew it on along the edge of the fabric as a decorative border. Stick the bed sheet onto the box, flatten it out, and fold the excessive part inwards.
- The headboard is carved out of a foam board. It is painted with two shades of purple.
- Use rainbow fabric to make a comforter. Sew a hollow rectangle shape, stuff it with cotton. Fold a few centimeters from the top then sew again to secure the fold. Glue the quilt to the bed and smoothen it.
- Use rainbow and spotted fabric to make three pillows. Sew three different small rectangles and stuff them with cotton. Stick them nest to the headboard.
- Cut out the front headboard using the foam board. Add rainbow designs onto the board and stick it onto the front side of the bed. (**The front headboard is made and shown in Step 5 because I wanted to consider the overall look later in that step so it's not shown in these pictures above.)
Cupboard:
- Cut out front, back, side and top part using foam board, assemble with hot glue gun. Cover it with green color, paint some patterns on the topside of it and also some drawers in the front.
Desk:
- Cut out a cloud-shaped cardstock as the flat top surface. On top of it, add clay and shaped it into a cloud. Paint it over with rainbow stripes.
- Cut out two semi-circle from the foam board for the table legs. Then cut out two semi-circle from paper and paint them over with rainbow using markers. Stick them onto the foam boards. Assemble them underneath the surface.
Swivel Chair:
- Cut out a square from the cardstock, cover the surface with glue and stick cotton on top, trim off excess cotton. Wrap this square with pink cloud fabric, cut off the excess. This is the seat cushion.
- Cut out the backrest from the cardstock and repeat the process above, then wrap it around the square seat cushion.
- Cut off a section of a straw, wrap it with fabric. This is the rotating lever of the chair.
- Cut out a circle for the foundation. Stick cotton above and wrap with fabric.
- Assemble them together.
- Sew a heart-shaped pillow and place it onto the chair.
Decorative Lines on the Wall:
- This is made of metal thread and bracelet beads. They are threaded together like a bracelet and glued onto the walls.
Shelves on the Wall
(**Front headboard of the bed is made here)
Shelves:
- Use foamboard to make six shelves. Paint them with rainbow color, glue them onto the wall.
Wood Disc Painting Above the Bed:
- Use a small wood disc to make a painting to hang on the wall. I drew some heart designs on this disc.
Table and Paintings
Table:
- Cut two "U" shaped strips from the foamboard, assemble them across each other, paint them with color. One circle for the table top and cover it with fabric, stick the sides down for effect.
Other Paintings Above the Bed:
- Cut rectangular shapes with paper and draw designs on them. Stick them around the wood disc painting.
Decorations
Things on the Shelves:
- A hand-made paper star on the red shelf. Cut out a paper strip and fold them into this shape.
- The yellow shelf has a pink car on it which was just a coat painted from the plastic car model.
- Cut out a heart from cardstock and wrap it around with blue twisted rod to make a heart-shaped picture frame. Put it on the orange shelf.
- Books on the blue shelf are made out of several layers of rectangular cardstock that are folded in half.
- On the green shelf there is a sculpture of human ascension. I made it with half of a plush ball and a plastic human figure.
- I made a cactus for the purple shelf. It's made out of clay with chopped metal thread for its thorns.
Dango on the Bed:
- This Dango pillow is inspired by a plush toy in my favorite anime Clannad and it means sticky rice balls. So I used a blue plush ball and two paper cutouts for eyes. I also used clay to make a rainbow hat for her.
The Guitar:
- First use the cardstock to create two identical guitar shaped paper cutout. Then cut a 1 cm strip to glue between the two layers to give it its thickness. Paint rainbow patterns on the surface. Then cut out the bridge, tuning pegs using cardstock and the neck using foam board. Assemble them and add details. Lastly, use thread to make strings and it's done!
The Plant at the Front Left Corner:
- I mixed purple paint with clay to create a marbled flowerpot. The I used fake moss as a base and fake leaves as its leaves. It extends all the way to the windows.
Things on the Small Table:
- Apples are made of clay with medal threads inserted on top as their stalks, covered with paint.
- The plate is also made of clay, with paint covered.
- The vase is still made of clay, with rainbow painted.
- The stem of the flowers in the vase are made of metal threads. The flowers themselves are made of clay.
Things on the Desk:
- The rainbow book is layers of paper stacked together and folded.
- The pen holder is made of paper with designs.
- The pen on the desk and pens in the pen holder are made of clay.
- The photo on the desk is made of cardstock and drawn with patterns.
The Lamp:
- The lamp is made of clay. I use crafting knife to cut the shape out and glue them together.
Wire and Electric Outlet:
- This is located behind the lamp. The electric outlet is made of clay and the wire is made of metal thread.
LED Light:
- Got this from art supply store Michael. Lights are glued along the decorative line, the socket is taped to the back.
