ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE ORNAMENT (SPUNKY)

RockoOrnament.jpg
Crafting day is a very dangerous day :)

Rocko's Modern Life was a childhood favorite of mine, so this year I decided to incorporate that memory into our Christmas tree with a Spunky themed ornament.  In this tutorial I will be showing you all the steps I took to create the final product.

Gather Your Supplies

For this project you will need the following:
  • 1 Clear Glass Ornament ( I got a 4 pack at Michaels for $2.49)
  • Acrylic Paint (I used Americana multi-surface satin in dark green, light green, white, black, yellow, pink, orange and red)
  • Paintbrush
  • Glass of water
  • Napkin
  • Foil (or any surface to mix your paint)
  • Stand for the ornament (I used a few things I had around the house: roll of painters tape, laundry detergent cup and an old ribbon roll)
  • Blow dryer
  • Sharpie
  • Scrap piece of paper
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors

Plan & Practice

This step is completely optional but I found it helpful to do a practice round on paper to get the feel for what I was going to be painting.

I knew I wanted to create a Rocko Ornament so I did some searching on youtube and found a good shot of Spunky in Mr. Bighead's Salmon bushes. Above is the screenshot I used as guide for creating the final design.

Supplies needed for this step:
  • 1 Clear Glass Ornament ( I got a 4 pack at Michaels for $2.49)
  • Acrylic Paint (I used Americana multi-surface satin in dark green, light green, white, black, yellow, pink, orange and red)
  • Paintbrush
  • Glass of water
  • Napkin
  • Foil (or any surface to mix your paint)
  • Stand for the ornament (I used a few things I had around the house: roll of painters tape, laundry detergent cup and an old ribbon roll)
  • Blow dryer
I started the painting process by roughly painting the big shapes so I could see the spacing on the entire ornament. Doing the practice sketch in the previous step really helped give me a good idea of how to size and space all of the images. I began with Spunky since he is the main focus, and then started adding the bushes, salmon and grass.

Once I had all of the pieces in place I started adding more coats of paint to achieve a completely opaque ornament. In between adding coats of paint I used a blow dryer to speed up the drying time. During this process I focused on fine tuning the edges so the design looked really sharp. It's okay if the edges aren't perfect since you will be outlining everything with a sharpie at the end.

Adding Black Outlines

Supplies needed for this step:
  • Sharpie
  • Scrap piece of paper
Once your done painting and the ornament is completely dry your ready to add the black outlines. Once I added these my ornament really came to life and had the cartoon feel I was looking for.

I used a black sharpie and simply outlined all of my painted edges. I kept a scrap piece of paper on hand to clean off the tip of the sharpie any time it would start to dry out from going over the paint. During this process you can clean up any edges that still look a little rough. When I finished outlining everything, I added some small texture lines around the entire ornament.

Adding a Hook

Supplies needed for this step:
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors

The last thing you need to do for your ornament to be complete is to add a hook. There are a lot of options here so you can really use anything you want, but for this tutorial I just used a piece of ribbon.

I cut a 7" piece of ribbon, looped it through the top of the ornament, tied a knot and trimmed the edges.

Hang!

Now your ornament is complete! Hang at home in your tree or give as a gift to your geeky friends and family :)  Use this tutorial to recreate this ornament or as inspiration to create a design from your favorite cartoon!
