R2-D2 (Or Any Astro Droid)

Here's the R2-D2 I made. I went into a lot of detail with the design, but you can have as little or as much detail as you want.

Supplies

  1. Half of a ping pong ball
  2. A popsicle stick
  3. Cardstock
  4. Hot glue gun
  5. Markers/Sharpies (Or any writing tool.)
  6. Tape

Determine the Circumference of the Ping Pong Ball

In order to know the proper length of the body of your R2-D2, you need to know the circumference. First you need to place the ping pong half on a scrap piece of paper. Next you need to trace the ball, then measure it. You can use inches or CM, I just used CM because I find it easier. Next you need to multiply the length of the circle by Pi, or 3.14. The result should be the approximate length of the paper for the body, but you should make the length a few millimeters longer to have a tab to connect the ends of the body to.

Making the Body

Now you measure and cut out the body. The length depends on the circumference of the ball, but the width is about 2". Before you tape the body into a cylinder shape, you should draw out your design, your design should be roughly in the middle of the paper. Once you have drawn the design, you roll the rectangle into a cylinder shape and tape it on both sides.

Making the Head

In this step all you basically need to do is draw R2-D2's head on a half of a ping pong ball.

Making the Legs

Now you cut the popsicle stick in half and color it.

The Feet

Next you cut triangle like shapes. These will be the feet.

Connecting It All

First you want tape the legs to the body, this is temporary, it is to keep the legs stable while you place and glue the head. You want to keep the round part of the legs near the place where the head will be, and the other end of the legs as close to the bottom of the body as possible. Next you want to put hot glue on the round end of the popsicle stick, on the side that has no color. Repeat this again with the other side. The glue will drip down to the paper and keep the sticks and the head together. Now you need to place a line of hot glue where you want one foot, then you place the foot on the line. You repeat this for the other side.
