Quilled Wedding Invitations

After making one of these 25 years ago, I was hooked.
This is my own style, I like to incorporate some crafted flowers too.
Over the years, I've made many of these framed invitations. They make
a nice personalized gift.
For something personal, it's helpful to know what the couple's
wedding colour(s) would be. (Pic #2) - their colours were violet and cream.
You can stick with a group of coloured papers that compliment it.
In (Pic #4), I chose to use a sea grass and made a wicker-looking basket
because they got married at the beach.
Gathering Your Materials

YOU'LL NEED: (Pic 1)
- White glue / hot glue / glue stick
- Quilling papers
- Quilling tool
- Scissors (the tinier, pointier, the better)
- Frame that has depth
- Mat or backing cardstock
- Wedding invitation
OPTIONAL:
- Ribbon or lace
- Embellishments (like doves & rings)
QUILLING TOOLS: (Pic 2)
There are little paper rolling tools available at craft stores. I like to use either a toothpick, skewer, or a probe from an old microwave for bigger stuff
REGARDING PAPER.....(Pic 3 / 4)
You can use quilling paper
They usually come in a colour pack & sometimes don't have the colour I need.
So I sometimes make my own quilling paper strips using coloured scrapbook papers and either running it through a shredder or use a paper cutter. If you're going to do this, choose a paper that has a solid colour all the way through because it is the edges you'll be seeing. (Pic 5)
Choose Your Shapes

Here is a sampler of various quilling shapes (Pic 1)
(Pic 2) This shows you how to make the little Round Buds
Cut a piece of quilling paper 3", fold it in half, use a bit of glue and your finger to spread it, glue the folded paper together. Let it sit for a bit to dry. Then cut your glued strip diagonally from corner to corner. For this next step, I like to use a toothpick. Starting with the wider end, tightly wrap the paper around the tip of the toothpick. When you get to the end, use a dab of glue to hold it together. Hold it between your fingers until the glue does its magic.
(Pic 3) This shows you how to make Spirals
Cut a piece of quilling paper 3", fold it in half, use a bit of glue and your finger to spread it, glue the folded paper together. Let it sit for a bit to dry. Then cut your glued strip diagonally from corner to corner. For this next step I like to use a toothpick. Starting with the wider end, tightly wrap the little triangle paper shape around the toothpick in a spiral.

Finding Some Inspiration....

- I like to browse flower catalogues for ideas. (Pics 1-5)
- When you decide what you want to make, make a little sketch where you'd like things to go
- Groupings of the same flower gives more impact (Pic 6)
Time to Assemble Your Bits & Pieces!

Lay down all your pieces according to your sketch
Make any changes in your layout, then start gluing things in place.
You can use the white glue. I use all 3 types:
Glue your Invitation in place using a glue stick
Glue your Backing / Mat in place using a mini glue gun
Glue your flowers in place with the white glue.
TWEEZERS are great for placing tiny things
Glue your trimming bits
S'More Stuff...

Quilling has worked its way into some of the other things I made.
I hope you'll be inspired to do something quilled too!
