Quick & Easy Gnome Wine Bottle Cover

These wine bottle covers are a quick and easy way to dress up a plain bottle of wine. Create one of these as a fun hostess gift or make one just to dress up your kitchen for the holidays. With just a few kinds of faux fur, a fun fabric for a hat and a wooden bead for a nose, you can make one of these guys in under an hour, no sewing machine required! This can also be done with just hot glue and be no-sew as well! Let me show you how quick and easy these cute little guys are to make!

Supplies

You will need:

  • Needle & thread
  • Two styles of faux fur
  • Flannel fabric (or use an old shirt!)
  • Fiberfill
  • Wooden bead
  • Scissors
  • Wine bottle (for sizing)
  • Hot glue
  • Box cutter or Xacto

Cut Out and Sew Hat

The first step is to cut out your hat. I used an old kids Christmas shirt for my hat so I cut the back off the shirt to give me the largest piece of fabric without an added seam. Cut a large triangle, about the same height at the wine bottle. Fold the triangle in half matching up the edges of the triangle, right sides together. If your fabric doesn't have a right or a wrong side (ie it looks the same from both sides of the fabric, such as my shirt here), you can just fold the triangle in half. Sew along the edge of the triangle using a baste or running stitch. Once complete, turn the hat right side out. Use a pencil to help turn out the tip of the hat, if needed.

Cut the Beard

Next, we will cut out the beard. I used two types of faux fur for this project, which is both fun and somewhat forgiving to work with, if you know how to cut it correctly! The secret to cutting faux fur is to cut it from the back using an Xacto or a sharp box cutter. Using gentle pressure, press just enough to cut through the fabric. Make sure not to cut into the fur as it will leave a harsh line in the fur and will make a mess with fur bits!

Using the bottle of wine for reference again, cut a triangle about half the length of the bottle. Once you have a triangle that the corners meet in the back, Cut the edges off the triangle to make something that looks like a baseball home plate.

Next I trimmed a little triangle out of the top middle where the nose will go so the nose can nestle down into the fur more.

TIP: If your faux fur has a direction to it, make sure to cut your beard so it is laying the right direction. You can see on the back of my piece, the edges of the fur stick out more on the sides than the top, this is how your want your fabric to look. If you cut it the wrong direction, your beard will look a little funny!

Trim the Hat

Now that we have the beard cut out, let's get back to the hat and trim it. Using the same faux fur cutting technique, cut a long, thin rectangle of faux fur. I used a longer white faux fur to line the hat. Cut a strip that is long enough to wrap around your hat brim, then sew the fur to the hat using a needle and thread.

Attach the Beard to the Hat

Nestle the edge of the beard just inside the bottom edge of the hat. Use the nose notch as a guide to keep the beard centered across from the back seam. Use a needle and thread to sew through the beard, hat and faux fur hat brim. Sew along the entire length of the beard and make sure to tie the end of securely.

Make a Faux Fur Pom Pom

Adding a pom pom is a fun addition that is pretty easy to do with faux fur. Cut a circle out of the faux fur and sew a running stitch around the edge of the circle. Pull the thread firmly to gather the edges of the pom pom to the middle. Stuff with a bit of polyfill, if needed. Sew the pom pom onto the tip of the hat.

Attach the Nose

Next we will attach the nose to the gnome. Flatten down the faux fur and smooth it away from the triangle cut out of the beard. Line the bottom of the nose with hot glue then firmly press it into the fur. Fluff the fur around the nose.

Enjoy Your Wine Bottle Cover

Slide the bottle cover over the top of the wine bottle and your bottle cover is complete! You can also fold the tip of the hat over and stitch the pom pom to the hat to keep it in place. Add a bit of polyfill to the top of the hat, if desired.

I've included a rear view of the cover on the bottle, just in case you were curious 😉

If you're not keen on sewing, you can do this project as a no-sew project and just use hot glue to attach everything together. Be careful when gluing the faux fur so you don't accidentally glue the fur together!

I hope you enjoyed this project! It's super quick and easy and is a great beginner project! Plus it looks pretty cute too! Make one of these guys up quick this holiday season and pair it with a nice bottle of wine as an easy gift.
