QUICK WING BOLT DRIVER

Bfr1.jpg

I assembled for a friend recently a couch he purchased in pieces from IKEA.

It came with several large wing bolts, (not wing nuts), that seemed very long and tedious to screw in.

STEP 1: RECOGNIZING THE PROBLEM

The wing bolt was about 3/8", (some metric equivalent, I am sure), in diameter, and close to three inches long. After driving this one in about half way, (see photo), I stopped to brainstorm for thirty seconds.

STEP 2: SOLVING PROBLEM

Since my drill driver has a 1/2" chuck, I knew the threads would fit inside it. So I put one of the Wing bolts in the chuck as shown in new photo. Second new photo shows bolt up close.

STEP 3: ENGAGE WINGS

Start bolt in hole, couple turns at least to make sure not cross threaded, then.........(see photo).

Engage wings to wings, and turn on drill a little bit by barely pulling on trigger.

Have drill in low gear, (first gear), for more control and power.

STEP 4: LAST BOLT

This works very well for all except, of course, for the very last bolt. It had to come out of the drill to go in the couch.

You may want to tighten it a bit with pliers after working fingers to the bone driving it down. Or put a screwdriver across the wings.

So the bolt became a tool. At least temporarily.
