A pulley is a simple machine used to make lifting heavier objects easier.

Supplies

Materials List

3 pieces of 10 x 2 inch pieces of cardboard.

1 piece of 8 x 2 inch piece of cardboard.

6 pieces of 2 x 2 inch pieces of cardboard.

1 styrofoam ball approximately 2 inches in diameter.

Glue the three pieces of 10 by 2 inch or cardboard together in a rectangle and glue the 8 x 2 inch piece of cardboard to the open side.

Making the Inside

Stick the popsicle stick through the center styrofoam ball, then poke holes in the side of the cardboard for the ends of the popsicle stick to come through. Then put the string around the cotton ball in a loop, one end through to the bottom of the machine and the other side on the outside of the machine.

Stringing the System

Poke two holes at the bottom for the straw to stick through and glue the round legs piece with gears on the end to the end of one of the sides of the straw. You then glue one side of the string to the popsicle stick inside the machine. Then take your 6 pieces of 2 by 2-inch pieces of cardboard and glue them together in a cube.

Step 4.

Then poke a hole in one of the sides and sting your string through and tie a knot so the string doesn’t come back up through the cube.

Now You Have a Functioning Pulley System!
