To make this card, you will need:
-cardstock: white, brown and black
-gift card
-printer
-Silhouette Cameo machine
-double sided tape
-pencil & ruler
Download File
Have you ever received one of those packages in the mail that you have to pull a tab to rip open the package? The process of ripping open the package is so fun and interactive! I thought it would be fun to incorporate a pull tab into a gift card holder so you get the fun interactive experience when opening the gift card. This particular card also includes some fun coffee bean confetti for an extra unexpected element.
To get started, download the Thanks a latte file, that can be found here: https://app.box.com/s/ymxl7ih6hbhxttwjek7kk0mdfpnomjnc
Cut the Brown Step
For this project, we will use the Silhouette Cameo to do Print then Cut. When you open the file, the cup and coffee beans should be arranged on the mat for you already, but if not, you'll want to make sure you turn on the registration marks. Click on the Mat Settings from the right hand toolbar. Next, turn ON the registration marks by clicking the Registration Marks tab (the white cutting mat with the arrows in the corners). Then make sure the registration marks radio button is clicked on.
Now that the registration marks are turned on, make sure the design is within the crosshatch area on the cutting mat. You can have cut lines within the crosshatch, but cannot do printed designs. In this case, just keep everything out of the hatchmarch area on the mat.
Print the design on brown cardstock. In my case, I used kraft cardstock. I wanted the coffee beans to be a little darker so I colored them in with brown for the printer to print them off. This also adds another color to the confetti too, which I thought added to the overall aesthetic nicely.
Once the design is printed, stick the paper to the cutting mat and load into the Silhouette Cameo.
In Silhouette Studio, go to the send tab and then pick the Line tab from the top. Uncheck the clear and gray line boxes so the machine only cuts out the red lined objects in the file. I also like to set the software to cut twice to ensure the Cameo cuts though the paper nicely.
Once the machine cuts, carefully remove the cut designs from the cutting mat.
Cut the White Step
Once you have the brown section cut, move the coffee cup and the coffee beans off the cutting mat and drag the white coffee cup pieces onto the cutting mat. This will also be a Print and Cut so you shouldn't have to change the cut settings at all. Print on white cardstock and repeat the steps followed in the brown step.
Cut the Black Step
For the black part of the coffee cup (the lid), we don't need to do print then cut as we will cut it out of black cardstock. To do regular cutting, you'll want to turn off the registration marks. If you forget to turn the registration marks off, the Cameo will say Registration Mark Failed and refuse to cut. Click on the Mat Settings from the right hand toolbar. Next, turn OFF the registration marks by clicking on the Registration Marks tab (the white cutting mat with the arrows in the corners). Then make sure the registration marks radio button is clicked off.
Load black cardstock on the cutting mat and cut the two pieces of black cardstock for the lid.
Fold the Card
Once you have all the pieces cut out, you can start to assemble the card! First we will want to pay attention to the top corner of the cup lid in the fold area of the design. This part will pop out towards the front of the card so when the card is folded in half, the piece sticks out to complete the edge of the lid. Fold the card along the score line, making sure the sentiment is on the inside of the card.
Attach Pieces and Add Details
Glue the pieces of the card onto the card base using double sided stick tape, or any type of glue you prefer. Be mindful of the pull tab in the middle of the card front and make sure the white pieces of the "cup" don't overlap that area.
I added a little extra detail to the cup by writing PULL on the tab and drawing in some lines with a pencil. This part doesn't have to be perfect, I thought it looked fun to be a little bespoke.
Load It Up and Seal It All in
Now that the card is ready, run double sided tape around the edges of the inside of the card. Skip the spot in front of the pull tab. Once tape is around the border of the card, place the gift card down and make a small pile of the coffee bean confetti on top. Press the card closed and make sure to keep the confetti inside by giving the card a little shake to move it around inside the card.
Gift the Card!
Now your card is complete! You can give the card and enjoy watching the person open it (or know it will be fun when they get to it!). The coffee bean confetti will pop out to make extra fun! When the recipient removes the gift card, they'll see the sentiment too!
Giving a gift card can seem so impersonal. Going the extra step to make a fun interactive card can turn a "thanks for the gift card" into a fun experience with a story to share!
