It is estimated that there are approximately 30 million people worldwide that are in need of prosthetic limbs. However, due to inaccessibility, and high pricing, they are not able to afford the prosthetics they need, which is why I started to work on this project. This is a model of a prosthetic hand which could be printed if needed, as an example of a cheap solution to a large problem worldwide.

Supplies

The attached files are stl, so if needed to be printed out, they are here.

Hand Base

For this first step, I had created a rough draft of a hand base, with slots for the gauntlet to attach, and to fit each of the fingers.

Proximal Phalange

Next, I had created the Proximal Phalanges which would connect the hand base to each of the actual fingers.

Cleaning Up

After creating the phalanges, I fixed some dimension issues, and created an assembly as an example, so I knew how far I had gotten with this project.

Fingers

After making the draft for the phalanges, I started making the fingers, 2 small sizes, 2 middle sizes, and 1 long one, to represent each of the fingers.

Assembly

I next made an assembly to combine the fingers, phalanges, and hand base, shaping out to resemble an actual human hand.

Touch-Ups

After this assembly, since I was missing a slot for the thumb, I decided to make it, and attached he thumb. I also did some touch ups on the hand, to make it more realistic.

Gauntlet

I next created a gauntlet wrist to attach to the hand base, really making the project take shape, and look much better.

Designing + Joints

For this step, I made some more touches to make the hand more realistic, such as a lot of filleting and finally added joints to the project, so that if it was printed out, you would be able to connect them and make them move.

Final Product

After spending about a month on this project, this is what the final product ended up looking like.
