Project 3: Simple Photoshop Project

Hello,

Today you will learn how to make a cutout of something in Photoshop and place that cutout into another photo. It will make it easier to keep up with your files if you make a folder for your project.

You will need these two photos:

Supplies

Have a Computer with Photoshop.

Make a New Project

Open Adobe Photoshop

Press "Create New"

When the window pops up change the centimeters tab to pixels.

Then change the width and height to 1080 pixels.

Press the blue create button at the bottom left side of the window.

Start the Cutout

First things first we have to grab the photos we have downloaded. Go the the top left and click the "File" tab and go down to "Place Linked..." shown in screen shot 1 of this step

This will take you to the photos you downloaded. Please click the "DSC_2305" photo or Fruit Tray photo if you changed the file name. This will place the Fruit tray photo in your photoshop project.

Once you have placed the photo. The tab on the right side of the screen that has the Fruit Tray photo in it with the eye next to it. These are your layers. You can turn off and on your layers by pressing the eye icon next to each layer. Right Click the Fruit Tray layer. Scroll to and click the tab that is labeled "Convert to Smart Object" shown in screen shot 2 of this step

Now Create another layer by pressing the Icon that looks like a box with a plus in the middle. Located at the bottom right side of the window. Shown in screen shot 3 of this step


Finish the Cutout

Next go to the left side of the the screen and scroll down to the "Paint Bucket Tool". Select an unique color and the new layer you just created. Click the frame and that layer should change into the color you selected. Shown in screenshot 1 of this step

Now go back to the left side of the screen and scroll down to the "Object Selection Tool". Shown in screenshot 2

Click and drag your mouse over the Fruit Tray. The Fruit Tray should be outlined by marching ants. Shown in screenshot 3

Now select the "Mask" button located at the bottom right side of the screen. Shown in screenshot 4

Lastly, to fully finish your cutout press the eye Icons next your background and the colored layer so that they are not visible. To make sure you did it correctly, ensure that it looks similar to screenshot 5. Shown in screenshot 5

Save the edited picture as a png file.


Placing It in Another Photo

Create a new file by clicking the "File" tab in the top left side of the screen and scroll down to "New...". Shown in screenshot 1 of this step

When the new window pops up, click create. It should save the same settings from the previous step.

Go to the top left side of the screen again and click "File" and scroll down and select the "Place Linked..." tab. Grab the counter-top photo. Shown in screenshot 2

Expand the photo so that it engulfs the frame. Shown in screenshot 3

Now go to the top left side of the screen and click the "File" tab and select "Place Linked..." tab one last time. Grab the Fruit Tray png you saved previously and place it in the frame. Shown in screenshot 4 and 5

If the Fruit Tray png is too big. Adjust the size to fit the frame. Shown in screenshot 6

Save the edited picture as a png and jpeg file.

Make Your Own

I have given you all the tools you need.

Now go ahead and make your own photoshop graphic.
