Prescription Glasses Aid

20180608_181743.jpg

Obe is 3,5 years old. He has a severe mental delay, troubles with eating and is being seen by 9 different medical specialists in UZ Gent. His mental age is around 12 months. He has a hypotone image, can't walk yet without an aid( he can walk with a walking aid and hopefully can walk by himself by the summer). He doesn't appear to have any feelings of hunger or interest in food. He can't eat/drink by himself. He gets fed through a tube as a supplement for his calorieintake. There are also visual problems but testing this has proven to be difficult. Obe now wears glasses of -7 but keeping it on is the issue. Aid: An aid that helps Obe keep his glasses on his head. He usually pulls this off.

Step 1 : Materials & Tools

Here are materials that we used for this project. everything you see is standard
MATERIALS

  1. Most of the materials are from the helmet itself.
We use straps and foam from the helmet.
Specifications: Size: XS 46-52 cm Weight: 230 grams
  2. You will need a transparent plastic sheet, we used pvc, to make the shield
  3. Velcro (but not that much, you can take some off the helmet you bought)
  4. You will need screws and bolts, 16mm x 4mm (x2)
  5. Rubber spacers for between helmet and the shield to create space in between (but you can use other alteratives.) We liked rubber because it provides flexibility. 16mm x 5 mm (x4)
    TOOLS
  6. Screwdriver: to mount the bolts
  7. Dremel or drill with a 4mm drill bit. Bore 2 holes in helmet headband.
  8. Use superglue, hot glue, or fabric glue to attach the velcro.
  9. You're ready to go!

Step 2: Preparation Before Assembly

  1. Remove everything inside the helmet; we need the headband tightening system, straps, velcro, and cushions.

Step 3: Parts From the Helmet

Now that we have everthing that we need form helmet, we need to add velcro to-

  1. The straps
  2. The sides of the headband tightening system

Step 4: Now We Bore Holes in the Frame and PVC Sheet

  1. Cut your face shield out of the PVC.
  2. Bore two holes in the pvc and headband, in order to attach the two.
  3. Add screws and spacers to ensure alignment BEFORE drilling through PVC.

Step 5: Assembly

Now We have everything we need to make the helmet

  1. Screw everything together
  2. Be sure the bolt is threaded through your spacer, this will expose the threads allowing you to add the nut.
  3. You can paint the visor as desired for sytle!
