Preparing for a Hospital Stay & Making Yourself More Comfortable

There comes a time in most people’s lives when they have to receive medical treatment. This can be for a variety of ailments, some mild and some more serious. Whatever the reason, it might be necessary for you to stay in hospital for the duration of your treatment.

Many people need hospital treatment, however the groups that are most often affected are the very young and the very old. It’s never easy going into hospital, particularly if it’s for an extended stay. Not only are you taken from the comforts of home, but you also need to think about getting better – and this can be a very anxious time, especially for more serious treatments.

But there are many things you can do to prepare for your hospital stay, and make it much more comfortable and less worrying. This is especially useful for parents who may have a tough time getting their children to be calm in what is undoubtedly a troubling time for a child.

Let’s explore some ways to make a hospital stay more comfortable in a little bit more detail.

Research Your Procedure

Often much of the anxiety of a hospital stay is due to uncertainty. You’re never quite sure of how it’s going to go. That’s why reading up on what your treatment might be and how it actually works can put your mind at ease.

If not just for your own peace of mind, there are also many questions that you might have that can be very well answered by doing some research. You should of course ask your doctor or a health professional for the more important questions, but if you’ve got a little query then research can often clear things up a bit or explain things in a way that your doctor might not be able to.

If you know exactly what is going on, that removes some of the element of uncertainty - so you might as well find out what is going to be done during your treatment. It all helps the stay become a little bit more relaxed and comfortable.

Go Private

Sometimes you just want to be sure that you’re comfortable and have what you need for a pleasant visit. As a result, it can often be a good idea to opt for private treatment. This allows you a greater degree of flexibility when it comes to booking a procedure or appointment and gives you a little bit more privacy when the time comes.

For example many pregnant women want a calm and peaceful pregnancy and so seek a private ultrasound scan or antenatal care that can sometimes make it that little bit more bearable and ensure you’re not stuck in a busy hospital any longer than you need to be. Many private maternity care services are popular amongst pregnant women, as they offer a range of care such as physiotherapy and exercise that aren’t strictly essential but can help encourage a healthy pregnancy.

Going private can be a good option if you’re able to get it, but many NHS patients have opted for private healthcare in recent years through various government schemes. It all depends on what you need, but it’s a good way to make your hospital stay more comfortable in what is often a sensitive time.

Bring Things From Home

If you’re staying away from home, it can be a little bit unsettling. This is especially true if you have a child who is in need of a hospital stay. There are several things you can do, however, for example bringing a few comforts from home can help keep spirits up.

Children might benefit from their favourite soft toy or perhaps a game that they enjoy, whereas adults may benefit from a few photographs and a little comforting reminder of home. It’s all about making yourself feel as peaceful as possible in what can be a very alienating setting, particularly for children who may not be used to such an experience or fully understand it.

Hospital is all about getting well, as a result it may be necessary for you to sit and rest for a long period of time. This can become dull, so when bringing things from home an MP3 player or perhaps a portable DVD player can be useful too – although many hospitals do provide some form of entertainment such as radio or television.

Having Visitors

Seeing the people that you love when you’re in hospital is one of the most important things you can do. It’s very comforting and can actually help you feel more positive and generally happier during what can be a very trying time.

Aim to see as many people as you can during your hospital stay, it just makes things a little bit more manageable and prevents boredom too. Having a conversation with a friend is a valuable thing, so make sure you try and ask your friends and loved ones to visit you if you think that would cheer you up.

Keep Calm & Carry On

Staying in hospital is not something that most people do that often, so it’s important to make sure that you keep yourself calm and level during this time. This is much better for your physical and mental health. In addition, much of healing is about rest – and if you’re calm you’re much more likely to rest better, and hopefully make a swift recovery.
