When an object is selected, it will be surrounded by handles, icons that allow you to effect an object. Clicking and dragging on the handles, you can move, rotate, and scale them on three axis, X, Y, and Z. In the image you can see that the Z axis is the same as up/down. The Y axis is the same as towards/away. The X axis is the same as left/right.
