Powerful Low Parasitic Inductance H-Bridge (Half / Full H-Bridge)

Best H-Bridge with Low Parasitic Inductance (Full / Half Bridge) for SSTC / DRSSTC

In this tutorial, I will show you how to easily construct a full H-bridge and half H-bridge with the help of breadboard and copper tape. This design almost eliminates inductive spikes. You should be able to push your MOSFETs / IGBTs to maximum defined ratings. I tested my IXTQ52N30P (52A, 300V) MOSFETs with this design at 220Vrms. This design will eliminate almost all parasitic inductances in solid state tesla coil.

When we are operating at high frequency most of the power is carried by skin of conductor (skin effect). Using a solid wire in that case would be bad idea. Using a wire also introduces inductive spike. Copper tape comes to our rescue in this situation and solves both of our mentioned problems.

Supplies

Choose your H-Bridge and gather the supplies:

Supplies for full H-Bridge:

  1. Solderable one-sided breadboard
  2. 4x MOSFETs / IGBTs (or 8x IGBTs, never connect MOSFETs in parallel)
  3. Copper tape

Supplies for half H-Bridge:

  1. Solderable one-sided breadboard
  2. 2x MOSFETs / IGBTs (or 4x IGBTs, never connect MOSFETs in parallel)
  3. Copper tape
  4. 2x CBB Capacitors

Prepare the Breadboard

Cut the breadboard in square shape.

Apply copper tape vertically on one side leaving some space in between. Also mark one copper plane as + and the other one as -.

Apply copper tape horizontally on the other side leaving some space in between. Also mark one copper plane as 1 and the other one as 2.

Solder the MOSFETs / IGBTs

For full H-Bridge:

  1. Place your MOSFETs / IGBTs as shown in picture. You have to slightly bend the pins.
  2. Bend the Gate Pins of MOSFETs / IGBTs all the way up.
  3. For the side marked as + solder the Drain pins. For the side marked as - solder the Source pins.
  4. Solder the remaining pins (not the Gate pins).

For full H-Bridge:

  1. Use 2x MOSFETs / IGBTs and 2x Capacitors.
  2. You have to puncture the copper tape to get one leg of capacitor to go to other side. Make sure it is not shorting anything.

If you are feeling adventurous I have provided schematic for 8x IGBTs full H-Bridge with some additional components (great for experimenting).

If you are using MOSFETs you don't need 1N5819 diodes soldered to Gates. MOSFETs are pretty fast already.
