Portable Charging Stand With Cable Holder
I have chosen to go after the engineering side of the STEM contest.
With Cell phones being a modern commodity that can be seen in almost every pocket, accessory's that improve users experience are being invented all the time. A charging stand that is light weight, easy to use, easy to make, and durable would almost certainly been useful to most people. This will be a guide on how to create a wooden charging stand that has cable holders on the back. This was created with the constraints of low cost, easy to find and use materials and tools that would be readily available to most people. This project shouldn't take more than 24-48 for a fully finished product that can be made at home.
Problem Statement: How can you make something that can hold up your phone for you and hold the cord, while keeping low cost and time to make in mind?
Supplies
Wooden Pieces
2x 1/2 inch x 4 inch
2x 1/2 inch x 3 inch
2x 1/2 inch x 1 inch with 1/4 inch x 1/2 inch notch cut out
1x 1/2 inch x 6 inch
4x 1/2 inch x 1/2 with 1/4 x 1/4 notch cut out
Wood Glue
Hand saw with proper blade for cutting wood
Seeing What's Out There
Currently there are many designs and products on the market that have similar uses to mine. I modeled mine as a variant specifically based on the imagine show above as it provides people with an easy way to charge their phone and use it while not having to hold it. I liked several aspects like the front holders to ensure the phone doesn't fall and the sturdy base to make sure the whole stand doesn't flip over.
My Design
I created this design with ease of DYI creation and low cost in mind. The finished product is made out of any variety of softwood the maker wants to use. Soft woods are much easy to work with than hard woods, making it preferable to hardwoods. The design provides a lowered base and center of gravity to prevent it from tipping over. It has hooks added to the front to ensure the phone stays firm on the holder. It also features four hooks on the back of the holder that provides the user with a place to wrap their charging cord around so they will have one available whenever they need it.
Creating the Pieces
Using your preferred hand saw(meant specifically to cut wood) create the following:
2x 1/2 inch x 4 inch
2x 1/2 inch x 3 inch
2x 1/2 inch x 1 inch with 1/4 inch x 1/2 inch notch cut out
1x 1/2 inch x 6 inch
4x 1/2 inch x 1/2 with 1/4 x 1/4 notch cut out
Assembly
Use any form of wood glue (make sure its wood glue) to connect the pieces. Follow the instructions on the bottle to ensure the glue has enough time to set.
Assembly:
First, make two of the end pieces show above. Then, connect the end pieces to the middle connector. Lastly, add the 4 hooks on the back of the assembly to hold the cables.
