Portable Airsoft Target (Saves BBs)

PXL_20210213_235314169.jpg

We're going to build an airsoft target that captures your BBs after you fire them. The Target is 24'' by 24''. The front will have clips to attach an archery target. The BBs puncture the target at the front of the box and then hit the fabric hanging at the back, absorbing their kinetic (movement) energy. This allows them to fall to the bottom of the box instead of bouncing out.

Supplies

Cut Plywood

On the plywood measure out 24" x 24", then cut.

This will become the back wall of the box.

Cut Some More Plywood!

Now we're going to cut the side, top, and bottom walls of the box. Each side measures 23" x 8".

Cut four 23" x 8" pieces from the plywood, plus an additional 24" x 1" piece.

Do not discard the 24" x 1" piece. We'll use it later.

Add Space for Target-Hanging Clips

On one 8" x 24" board, mark 4" from the short end of the board.

Make an additional mark at 7.5" from the short end of the board

Make marks at 0.5" and 1" from the long side of the board, at both the 4" and the 7.5" measurements.

Connect these markings to form a rectangle.

Cut the rectangle out of the board.

Cutting the rectangle can be done in a multitude of ways, but ours was to drill two holes at each end and cut using a wood router from the holes. You can use different tools to accomplish this task.

Repeat all tasks listed above on the other end of the board. Your result should be symmetrical.

Repeat on one other 8" x 24" board.

These two boards will be the floor and roof of your box.

Making Corner Supports

From your 2" x 3" x 36" board, cut two 8" long pieces, and two 7" long pieces.

These will later support the walls of the box.

Assemble (Part 1)

Now that we have all of our walls and corner supports cut out, we will begin to assemble the box.

Arrange your top, bottom, and side walls with the corner supports as shown in the diagram. The top and bottom walls are the ones with the holes/lines.

Attach the walls to the corner supports as you please. you can attach them with one, two, or three screws on each side. For ours, we used two screws for each side.

Assemble (Part 2)

Now that we have our walls attached to each other, we need to attach them to the back wall of the box.

Flip your walls over so that the front of your box is facing the floor.

Place the 24" x 24" piece of wood from before so that it aligns with the walls.

Attach to the corner supports using as many screws as you like. We recommend at least two for each corner.

Attach Stopper to Bottom Wall

Take the "leftover" 24" x 1" strip from before and cut one inch off either end.

Attach the strip to the bottom wall of the box. The strip should be flush with the front of the box.

Adding Cloth

From the remaining 6" of your 2" x 3" x 36" board, cut two 3" pieces to mount the cloth on.

Attach the two 3" blocks as shown in the diagram. When screwing the third screw in, (shown in diagram) make sure the cloth has some slack.

Completion!
