Pop Bottle & PVC Geocache

This is a cool little project that uses recycled pop bottle tops, caps, and scrap pieces of PVC pipe to make neat, waterproof geocache containers.  I save all kinds of plastic containers... I'm a saver and re-user.  (My wife says I'm a hoarder)

2- 2 liter soda bottles (20 oz work too)
1.5 inch PVC pipe
hot glue gun and glue
hobby knife
slide clamp
cammo duct tape (optional)

Carefully cut the top off of a plastic soda bottle.  (Drink all the pop first, waste not :)  You might want to take time to rinse the bottles so as not to have a sticky mess to deal with.   Cut the top about 3/8 of an inch below the flange, just where it starts to bulge out to make the top of the container.  BE CAREFUL!  Paper cuts hurt, but PLASTIC cuts SUCK!

Cut a piece of 1.5 inch diameter PVC to the desired length of your geocache.  I recommend using a miter saw set to 0 degree angle, to make sure you get a nice flat top and bottom to seal your bottle tops to.  A chop saw will work great too.  If you have neither of these, just take care to measure and mark the PVC accurately before cutting it with a hacksaw.

Apply a double thick bead of hot glue to the bottle top, just under the flange.  Insert the bottle top to one side of the PVC.  Apply pressure and hold it there for a few seconds.  The excess glue should squish out between the bottom of the flange and PVC.  Repeat the process for the other side of the PVC and the other bottle top.  Place them in the grip of a slide clamp and let the glue cool for a few minutes.  This should create an airtight seal.  After several minutes (5 to 7), you should be able to remove one of the caps and blow into the container.  If you don't hear the hiss of air escaping and your cheeks puff out, you are GOOD!

Trim the excess glue that has squished out from each of the joints.  Be careful to trim ONLY flush with the side of the PVC to maintain a good seal.  Take care using your hobby knife.  Repeat for the other side.

ALL DONE!  You can also use 3 liter bottles tops and caps, with 2 inch PVC for slightly bigger Geocaches.  Paint them, or cover in your favorite cammo duct tape and they are ready!

If you make both sizes, you will find that the exterior diameter of a 2 liter cap fits snuggly into the inner flange of a 3 liter bottle cap.  You can make different combinations how you want to combine these.  This is my first Ible.  I hope I was thorough enough to help you replicate this project.  BTW they can also double for storing dry food goods, matches, fire tinder, you name it.
