Pom-Pom Cloud Wall Décor

PXL_20230129_231939033.jpg

This cloud makes lovely décor for any room, and is simple enough for people of all ages to understand. For the pom-poms hanging from the cloud, you can use your favorite colors. I used variegated yarn in bright colors because I like the pop of color against my white walls.

Supplies

For this project you will need:

Weight 4 yarn of any color (I recommend Red Heart Super Saver because it is cheap, soft, and comes in many vibrant colors),

Weight 4 white yarn for the cloud (Again, Red Heart Super Saver is your best bet),

Three pieces of cardboard, one 2 by 4 inches, one 3.5 by 4 inches, and one 5 by 6 inches,

Any pair of scissors you prefer,

Hot glue gun

The first thing you need to do is take your 2-by 4-inch piece of cardboard and some of your colored yarn (not the white yarn). Wrap the yarn around the piece of cardboard 60 times. Cut the yarn connected to the ball and carefully remove it from the cardboard. Cut a 6-inch piece of yarn and put the wrapped yarn on top of it. Tie it in the middle really tight, flip it over, and tie it really tightly twice.

Next, take your scissors and carefully slide them through the loops on one side of the pom-pom and cut. Do the same for the other side. After you have cut all the loops, use the scissors to trim the pom-pom into a sphere. Make 5 in total.

For three of the pom-poms, take your 3.5-by-4-inch piece of cardboard and your white yarn and wrap the yarn around the cardboard 80 times. Cut the yarn connected to the ball and slide it off of the cardboard. Cut an 8-inch piece of yarn and put the pom-pom on top of it. Tie it tightly in the middle, flip it over, and tie it two more times.

Take your scissors and cut all the loops. Trim the pom-pom into a sphere.

Take one of the small white pom-poms and spread some of the strands. Put a glob of hot glue in that spot. Take another pom-pom of the same size and press it against the blob. Hold it in place for at least 30 seconds to let the hot glue dry. On the pom-pom you just glued on, on the side opposite of the other pom-pom, spread the strands and apply a glob of hot glue. Hold the pom-poms together for at least 30 seconds, until the hot glue dries. On the top of the middle pom-pom, spread the strands and apply a glob of hot glue. Take the big cloud pom-pom and press it onto the glue. Hold it in place until the glue is dry. Put a blob of glue on the right pom-pom and press the big pom-pom onto it. Let dry and do the same thing with the left pom-pom. Let dry and the cloud is done!

To make a chevron like I am doing, cut two 5-inch pieces, two 6.5-inch pieces, and one 8-inch piece out of the white yarn. Take one of the colored pom-poms and a 5-inch piece of yarn. Spread the strands of the pom-pom and put a blob of glue there. Take the piece of yarn and put it on top of the glue, making sure not to touch the glue. Take the strands and press them around the glue. Ask an adult for help on this part! Let dry for a minute, then repeat for the remaining pom-poms.

Spread the strands of one of the bottom cloud pom-poms and put a blob of glue there. Take one of the hanging pom-poms and put the end of the yarn that is not attached to the colored pom-pom on top of the glue, making sure not to touch the glue. Take the strands and press them around the glue. Let dry, and repeat for the remaining pom-poms. Make sure to put them all across the bottom.

To make a chevron, the order by the length of strings is below.

5in, 6.5in, 8in, 6.5in, 5in.

Cut a 6-inch piece of yarn and fold it in half. Put a glob of glue at the end of the two strands. let dry. Spread the strands in the middle of the biggest pom-pom and put a glob of glue there. Put the glued end of the loop into the glue. Press the strands around the glue. Let it dry.

Congratulations! You have finished your cloud!

To hang it up, ask an adult to put a small nail in the wall. Hang it by the loop at the top.
