Police Car Train

Hello. This is my Police Car Train for my Advanced engineering class at Benicia High School. Sadly, I wasn't able to finish. I was unable to get the red and blue lights to fit on the pegs in the right and left corner, but I still got most of it done. It was my first time 3D printing something with some actual weight to it and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It did take a while to get all the pieces to fit and all the dimensions correct, but overall it was super fun to create, print, and put together.

I made all of the train in Fusion 360. The only parts that were not made in Fusion are the nails, the thumbtacks, and the magnets. This train is also able to be attached with other toy trains so that, when on a track, you can connect all of the trains you have with this train.

Design in Fusion

This is my design from Fusion 360. I measured one of the Thomas and Friends trains to get an idea of the size that I needed to make the wheels, main body, and other pieces. It wasn't too hard to get the train to fit on the track and the pieces to fit together. I tried to attach all of my Fusion files, and I got most of them, but I was unable to attach the main body piece.

3D Print the Part

The last thing that you need to do in making this train is to 3D print the parts. The machines that I used are the Stratasys and the Ultimaker. I printed the main body and the blue lights on the Stratasys and the wheels and attachable on the Ultimaker. To use the Stratasys you must use GrabCAD and to use the Ultimaker you must use Cura. For the Stratasys you have to save the files and export them onto the GrabCAD website. For the Ultimaker, you fave to save and export the files as well, but after that you must put a USB into the computer to save the files to the USB. Once you do that, you plug the USB into the Ultimaker to print.

In the case of my train, you may need multiple pieces of certain parts. In the case of multiple parts, I listed how many you need b

  • Wheels (4)
  • Main Body (1)
  • Attachable Piece (1)
  • Blue Lights (2)
  • Red Lights (2)
