Poke-pumpkins / Pokemon Rice Crispy Ball
Forget about carved pumpkins for Halloween!
For anyone who is a Pokémon fan, I hope you like this because I was going to a Halloween party this year and we have a tradition of carving pumpkins but I couldn't find the perfect one!
So I decided to make a pumpkin shaped object but make it one thousand times better by making a giant pokeball! It might not be scary but I thought it was a great substitute for a carved pumpkin PLUS WE GOT TO EAT IT! (it was like a giant rice crispy heaven in your mouth!)
You can either make one big one or smaller ones too I like making a mixture of big and some small because it is like a family of poke-pumpkin balls :D
Ingredients
- 6 Cups of Rice bubble cereal
- 280 grams of White Marshmallows
- 45 grams Butter
- 1 tsp Vanilla bean paste
- Red food colouring
- 1 Egg White
- 1 1/3 Cups of icing sugar
- Black food colouring
- White circular mints
Equipment
- Medium saucepan
- 2 Large mixing bowl
- 1 large and 1 Small mixing bowl *(to mold the poke-ball)
- Piping Bag with round nozzle
- Mixing spoons
- Glad wrap
Make the Marshmallow Mixture
In a saucepan heat the butter on a medium high heat and stir until melted. Add the marshmallows into the melted butter and continue to cook and stir until all the marshmallows have melted. Once it is smooth add the vanilla and stir together.
Separate the Mixtures
Halve the rice bubble cereal into 2 large mixing bowls. (one will become the bottom, white part of the pokeball, the other the red top). Pour in half of the marshmallow mixture into one bowl and mix together until the cereal is completely covered.
With the remaining marshmallow mixture add red food colouring to it until it is a beautiful bright red and then pour it into the other bowl of rice bubbles. again mix until evenly coated.
Form Your Poke-pumpkin/balls
Take a large, medium or small bowl (depending on the size that you want your poke-pumpkin/ balls) and place some glad wrap so that it covers the inside of the bowl.
Place some of the white mixture in the bowl and press it firmly into the bowl so that there are no spaces in the dome. Then take it out of the bowl and place aside, repeat with the red mixture in the same size bowl (so that the 2 halves will fit together perfectly.)
Alternatively you can also just shape them in your hands as well.
*TIP*
Make sure that you shape the balls with cling/glad wrap because they make your hands incredibly sticky!
Make the Black Royal Icing
Place the egg white into a mixing bowl and with an electric beater beat the eggs until they have soft peaks. Then gradually add the icing sugar and mix until combined and smooth.
Then add the black food colouring until it becomes a dark black colour and put it to the side.
Decorate the Poke-pumpkins
Place the black icing into a piping bag with a round tip nozzle (if you are making small poke-pumpkins then use a small nozzle, big poke-pumpkins = large round nozzle)
Take one white and one red half of the poke-pumpkin and then place some black icing on the white half. Then press the two halves together and allow them to dry.
Around the joining line of the two halves pipe the black icing around the whole ball and then on the 'front' of your poke-pumpkin place a circle of icing to act as the 'button' of the pokeball. Then place the white mint or round white candy on to finish the button.
Enjoy!
Once the balls have completely dried they are easy to carry and touch. the royal icing can take up to an hour to fully dry (black food colouring stays on your hands! so make sure to wait until they are fully dried)
This is a great recipe because you can make tiny poke-pumpkins or one large one or a mix, depending on your party/ Halloween needs.
