Plywood Slippers
So I got a challenge to build something from material available around me and it should not be sophisticated in term of design and making it.
Since I am in the workshop I have the facility and a huge amount of waste material around me to work with. I block myself from designing it very high tech and started with doing it simple with my hand and instinct. Maybe it is not a big deal for any experienced maker but to stay in touch with making ground this small and quick exercise is very helpful...
Supplies
Material Requirement :
- Plywood around 8mm ( good to use waste one as possible )
- Cardboard or paper sheet to trace your feet on ( again good to use waste one )
- Soft Cotton Rope
Tools Needed :
- Hacksaw (Handtool) or Jigsaw (Powertool)
- Sandpaper or grinder for smoothing surface
- Drill Machine and drill bit 5mm
Tracing Feet
Keep feet on cardboard or on paper and trace it with Pencil.
Smoothing and Cutting
Smooth borderlines manually with hand and pencil. No need to take the finger's details. Cut off design when it is done.
Plywood
We can even directly start with plywood but We use our cardboard cut as a template to trace the design on plywood.
Using jigsaw (or can use a hacksaw for simple ) take the design out from plywood sheet and use sandpaper or wheel grinder to smooth edges.
Marking Holes
Referring to your feet mark some points for holes. One hole is in between the thumbs and finger. Other two holes on the side as you see in the video. You can refer to your regular slipper for an idea of where to put holes.
Drilling Holes
Drill holes on marked points. Clamp material properly to make the job easy.
Putting Rope
Put the soft cotton rope in holes as shown and give a knot on the end so it stays in place. The knot on the bottom also gives a grip while walking with this slipper.
Yabba Dabba Doo!
it is done!
What can we do further?
Since This design was a small exercise with making things with hands as simple as possible. But while doing it I found more ideas and material to work with next time in the future for designing footwear for actual use. Wooden footwear is already popular in many cultures.
Thankyou!
