Recognizing vehicle number plates is a difficult but much needed system. This is very useful for automating toll booths, automated signal breakers identification and finding out traffic rule breakers. Here we propose a Raspberry Pi based vehicle number plate recognition system that automatically recognizes vehicle number plates using image processing. The system uses a full HD camera with Infrared sensor along with LCD display circuit interfaced to a Raspberry pi. The system constantly processes incoming camera footage to detect any trace of number plates. On sensing a number plate in front of the camera, it processes the camera input, extracts the number plate part from the image. Processes the extracted image using OCR and extracts the number plate number from it. The system then displays the extracted number on an LCD display. Thus we put forward a fully functional vehicle number plate recognition system using Raspberry Pi.

Prepare Hardware: Raspberry Pi

Get the Raspberry Pi ready. Make sure it contains 4x USB input, 1x HDMI input, and 1x micro SD card slot.

  • USB: 1x Camera, 1x Mouse, 1x Keyboard, 1x Reserved.
  • HDMI: For the main screen output.
  • Micro SD card slot: For inserting process codes.

Prepare Hardware: Main Mother Board

It should contain power inlet source, along with reset push button. Connect IC Socket to the main mother board and IC to LCD display. Connect Diodes, Transistors, Capacitators, Resistor and LED to make a complete power cycle.

Insert all codes to micro SD card.

  • Insert the coded SD card to its slot.
  • Connect the Camera via USB
  • Connect the Mouse Via USB
  • Connect Keyboard Via USB
  • Connect the screen to raspberry Pi using HDMI port.
  • Connect Raspberry Pi to mother board using the connector.
  • Connect the LCD to mother board in the IC socket.
  • Connect main power source.

Initializing:

On the screen, go to folders icon, then to "Number plate Recognition.py". This should run the system.

Once the system is activated, make sure LCD display shows "found Camera". Then, a massage display " license plate no." it means system is running well.

Now get a plate number on your phone and place it in front of the camera, it will show the plate number on the LCD screen.
