Pizza From Down Under

cover.jpg

While living in Australia I was introduced to the traditional pizza. Being from NY having egg on pizza seemed extremely strange!  After trying it a few times I realized that maybe them Aussies were not so crazy at all….well in regards to cooking pizza…

Things You’ll Need

Pizza Base/Dough
Marinara Sauce (Recipe in blog)
Garlic
Onion
Raw Spinach
Egg
Fresh Mozzarella
Romano Cheese or Parmesan
Ham Slices
Olive oil
Balsamic Vinegar

Prep Toppings

Tip #1  Egg on pizza is different..but try it! Try New Things!

For this recipe I made personal size pizzas.  Dice onions, ham slices, and garlic and fry them up in a heated skillet.  Once ham is lightly browned and onions are softened set aside topping in a bowl.

Starting Pizza Assembly

Tip #2 Use a pizza stone to get your base extra crispy.

Begin to assemble pizza.  Start by spreading a nice layer of marinara sauce followed by slices of mozzarella cheese.  I do not like to put shredded cheese on pizza.  The slices make it extra cheesy!  After applying cheese add on your ham, onions, and garlic with a dash of oregano, garlic powder, and some salt!

Sift the Egg....

Place pizza in oven preheated to 375F and begin to bake.  While pizza is in the oven start getting ready to add on the egg.  First sift a large egg to make sure you get rid of the loose bits. This prevents egg from spilling everywhere!

Egg Balancing Act

Now place egg in shallow dish and gently and carefully add onto top of the pizza trying not to break the yolk. If egg starts to slide off use a plastic spatula to secure it into place.

Garnish Pizza

Now turn the oven up to 475F and let it bake until whites of egg are fully cooked, leave the yolk runny!  While pizza is baking, heat a small pot on stove and add in about 4 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar and bring it to a frantic bubble!  Stir until amount has reduced by about half.

Tip #3 Garnish is important to make a dish!  Adds levels of flavoring!

Now remove the pizza and begin to garnish with a light spinach salad. Chop your spinach into thin ribbons and set in center of your pizza. Then take your balsamic reduction and drizzle over top along with some olive oil and some Romano cheese!  Add some crushed red pepper and serve!

To Make You Eggsperience More of a Delight!

Suggestions:

  • Serve with a nice Merlot to compliment the marinara.
  • Add on more eggs!  While I was eating I wish I had added another.
  • Canadian bacon will also work instead of ham!
