Pine Birdhouse

Hello all, and welcome to my first Instructable, along with my first woodworking project in general. I made this with the help of my dad, a wood board as seen above, and a couple of power tools. This is a simple birdhouse with an entrance hole and a small deck in the front of the house.

• A 1" x 6" x 5' board (I used pine so most other types of wood will work just as well)
• 4cm long screws
• Power drill
• Hand saw
• An appropriate drill bit to carve the entrance hole

Here are the dimensions for each piece of the birdhouse:

• Floor
  • 8.5" x 5.5"
• Roof piece #1
  • 8.5" x 4.75"
• Roof piece #2
  • 8.5" x 5.5"
• Side pieces
  • 5.5" x 4.5"
• Front/Back side pieces (before cutting diagonally)
  • 7.25" x 5.5"

The front and back side pieces will be cut diagonally towards the top center from the 4.5" mark.

The entrance hole will be 1.5" in diameter, so bring the right size drill bit to cut it out. The hole will also be 4" from the bottom of the front side piece and centered.

Pilot holes are important for this in order to avoid splitting the wood when adding the screws.

The placement of these pilot holes are as follows:

• Floor piece
  • 2 holes 6/16" from one side lengthwise and 1" from each side widthwise
  • 2 holes 2" from the other side lengthwise and 6/16" from each side widthwise
• Front/back side pieces
  • 2 holes 1" from the non-diagonal side lengthwise and 6/16" from each side widthwise
  • 2 holes 4" from the non-diagonal side lengthwise and 6/16" from each side widthwise
• Side pieces
  • These pilot holes will be formed by drilling through the front and back pieces when they are lined up in their position in the final product
• Roof piece
  • 2 holes 1" from each side lengthwise and 6/16" from one side widthwise.

Before drilling screws through the pilot holes and into the wood, adding wood glue is a must in order to create a waterproof seal on the birdhouse as it will most likely be placed outside. Be sure to set each screw in their pilot holes before screwing all the way to add the glue.

When all is finished, the birdhouse should look like this. My project was a bit off in some cuts so there is some visible unevenness.
