Pie Poetry
In Celebration of Pi Day (March 14th) let’s look into creating some awesome poetry to talk about the Pi (and Pie) that we all love! This project is fairly easy for any age and can be created physically on paper or digitally in a word document. For this tutorial, we will create one Pi/Pie poem and will focus on creating a physical poem on paper. Final editing could allow for a finished document on Canva. We will be focusing on acrostic poems which means you take the word and align the letters vertically so the poem spells out what you are writing about.

-Pen
-Paper

Pick Your Pie
This should be the easiest part! Pick either a pie or go for the first few numbers in Pi and list them vertically on your page. These will be the starting letters (or numbers) of your poem.
Example:
A
P
P
L
E
P
I
E
Brainstorm
Begin to Creatively write or brainstorm the lines of the poem. The vertical lines together write the word pie. However, the lines do not necessarily have to be describing pie. It could be the creation of pie. Or a memory around pie. I have listed an example below.
A nother day working with slow stead hands
P eeling in a circular motion
P eeling red rinds off of a rosy red shape
L iltte cuts decorating lattice on the top of sugary sweet
E nter into the oven
P acing thee room waiting for the timer to beep.
I t’s done!
E at up.
Edits
Take a look at your lines. Are they similar in length? Are all words spelled correctly? Do you want to use punctuation? Take time to edit these little pieces and title your poem to finish it up!
"Ode to Apple Pie"
Another day working with slow steady hands
Peeling in a circular motion around a small sphere
Peeling red waxy skin off turning round and round
Little cuts decorating lattice crust on the top of sugary sweet
E nter into the oven hoping for a perfect bake
Pacing the room waiting for the timer to beep.
It’s time to check the bake. with a bubbly middle
Evaluate the sweet substance and eat up!
Add Some Sparkle!
You can spruce up the poem by typing it and utilizing an editing service like Canva to create a nice background for your poem. You will want to create a free account on Canva and find a background to fix your work. There are many options on Canva to help make your poem beautiful and exactly what you want.
