Symptoms of Fault

Original key no longer working, loose handle, no longer locking the hatch

The Fault

It is very common for individual components within the handle to fail, or keys to be lost

Hard top handles often need replacing due to a single component within the mechanism failing, such as the spring or the lock cylinder. Or the handle might need replacing due to losing the keys.

Handles from the original manufacturers are expensive and can also have long lead times if on back-order. Automotive locksmiths are also pricey.

The Solution

Install our new hard top handle for a cost-effective fix

Instead of purchasing a new handle from the manufacturer of your hard top (which can be very pricey!), purchase our universal replacement handle instead.

Our replacement handle is made of high-quality materials which look exactly like the OEM handles, for a fraction of the price.

If you have lost your keys, or perhaps the lock cylinder has seized leaving the key redundant, then you will find that replacing your handle with our X8R replacement handle must more cost-effective.

Vehicles Affected

This handle is suitable for Truckman canopies with the following specification:

  1. Non-central locking type canopy
  2. With windows on the side of the canopy
  3. Fits canopies with series number M1##### (can be identified by the sticker inside the canopy)

You Will Receive

1 x Double sided canopy handle complete with two keys

Supplies

You will need:

  1. 10mm spanner
  2. Philip's head screwdriver

Step 1.jpg

Using a 10mm spanner remove the dome head nuts which hold the interior handle into place. Remove any washers underneath these nuts. Remove the interior handle.

Step 2.jpg
Step 3.jpg

Remove the interior panel using a Philip's head screw driver and removing the screws either side. This exposes mechanism of the handle.

Step 4.jpg

Remove the two nuts and any washers holding on the metal brackets in which the arms are located.

Step 5.jpg
Step 6.jpg
Step 7.jpg

Unclip the two arms from the black plastic clips and hook them out of the metal brackets. Pull the brackets from the mechanism.

Step 9.jpg
Step 10.jpg

Remove the central bolt from the spring retaining bracket. Carefully remove the spring retaining bracket, this is loaded with the pressure spring behind. Remove the spring.

Note the orientation of the spring retaining bracket and how the spring is fitted behing it, the new bracket and spring will need to be fitted in the same way.

Step 11.jpg
Step 12.jpg

Unscrew the large nut around the locking barrel. Followed by removing the metal plate and the rubber gasket.

Step 13.jpg

Use a 10mm to remove the nut on the lefthand side followed by the crush washer and penny washer. Pull away the handle.

Step 14.jpg
Step 15.jpg

Insert the external handle section of the new X8R handle into the two holes. We found it easiest to install the new penny washer, crush washer and 10mm nut onto the lefthand side of the handle first (to hold it into place). Ensure you do not overtighten the nut as this could cause damage.

Step 16.jpg
Step 17.jpg
Step 18.jpg

Press the rubber gasket over the righthand side of the handle. Followed by the metal plate and the lock barrel nut.

Note: ensure the holes of the circlip which retain the locking barrel are on the flat side of the locking barrel, otherwise the circlip may catch on the lock barrel nut.

Step 19.jpg
Step 20.jpg
Step 21.jpg

Install the spring and the spring retaining plate in correlation to how the original was installed, ensuring the long threads are protruding outwards. Install the central bolt and tighten with a 10mm.

Note: have the central bolt ready to go, the spring retaining plate is under pressure from the spring which can be tricky to hold for a long period whilst getting the bolt ready. It may be best to have another pair of hands for this step.

Step 22.jpg
Step 23.jpg

Press on metal brackets which hold the arms (the brackets with the black plastic clips). They are marked "L" (left) and "R" (right), ensure they are installed the correct way round. Press the arms into the black plastic clips and into the holes on the brackets. Tighten the two 10mm nuts over the threads.

Note: if the arms are too tight or loose twist the arms to tighten them or loosen them accordingly.

Step 24.jpg

Reinstall the interior panel and the original Philip's head screws.

Step 25.jpg
Step 26.jpg

Fit the interior handle over the protruding threads followed by the two remaining washers and the dome head nuts. Do not worry if there is a gap around the interior handle, as you tighten the dome head nuts with a 10mm spanner the gap will reduce.

Step 27.jpg

Test both the interior and exterior handles. If the handle is not throwing far enough or is throwing too far remove the interior handle and the interior panel again. Twist the arms to tighten/loosen them (as mentioned in step 11).
