Pick N' Place Maker Space

Maker Space 6.JPG

Introduction: Quick introduction before I get started. My name is JJ (rather my nickname). I am a high school junior and love math and physics. I will be obtaining a degree in engineering. I have also been a part time internship at a local Industrial Engineering company that I obtained after taking a course in Autodesk Inventor. I help design machines for processing and handling of wood and other products. Through this internship though, I am finding that my interests lie more in the realm of just creating, coming up with new ideas and pursuing them and bringing them into reality. Whether that idea is music related, robotics, 3D printing, or electronics (still working on getting better with this), just anything in STEM. I recently designed a 3D printed electric cello. The model is included in my submitted project.

My Project: Pick N' Place Maker Space. There is such a huge need for this in rural environments, like where I live. In our small rural area there are few opportunities and so they have to be "created": This is an affordable way to do this, being able to share the resources between community centers, small schools, and even parks. The "Pick N' Place Maker Space" could be left on site for a month or two and moved to another site. It could be easily adapted to each sites needs and even bring "summer camps" to far reaching places.

The idea would be to use a shipping container to house 3D printers, CNCs, Computers, Electronics, and other tools. Shipping containers would work perfectly for this since they can be upcycled, and moved around with existing equipment like PODS' trucks (a moving/storage company that already uses shipping containers as part of their business). They can also be made configurable for different sets of tools, like a wood shop, digital fabrication, electronics, computer, robotics, etc. The one presented in this Instructables is an all around Maker Space with 3D printers, a CNC, a work bench with tools and bins for parts, computers for designing, programing, and researching, Electronics stations for soldering and testing, and even just a place to brain storm on a massive white board is included. These Pick n' Place Maker Spaces could be used for schools, clubs, camps, and any other STEM related activity like out reach at local fairs and smaller community events.

The Shipping Container

Wall Installation

The first step in making a shipping container into a Maker Space is to install inside walls with insulation (Purple), dry wall (white), electrical, and framing (Light Brown). As per the instructions, I chose a 20' long x 8' wide x 9'6" tall container found on GrabCAD (Shipping Container). I used 2x2 Studs to both reinforce the walls and increase the amount of space for insulation.

After the walls, it's time to move in the different desks, tools, organizers, and other nick-knacks that can be found in a Maker Space. In this one, there are 3D printers, a CNC, work benches, computers, electronic work stations, storage carts, shelves, and more.
