Phone Case and Leash

Do you lose your phone in your gym bag or purse? Need a quick and easy way to protect the phone, but also find it quick? This crocheted case & leash is a fast & easy way to keep the phone safe, but retrieve it quick.

The pattern is very forgiving and easy for beginners.

Yarn (any will do, but “worsted weight”, “medium”, or “4” works well)
Crochet hook (H-8 (5mm) or J-10 (6mm) preferred)
Scissors
Phone (to get the size correct)
Optional: yarn needle

Chain until you have a chain that is only slightly longer than your phone is wide. My phone is relatively small (pink in picture, iPhone mini), so it is about 12 chains. My husbands phone is much bigger, and so is about 16 chains.

- Turn, and crochet along one side of the chain stitches in the initial chain. Really any crochet stitch will work, in the pictures I have used “half double crochet”… which is…. Yarn over the hook, insert the hook into the next stitch (along one side of that base chain), yarn over again, pull through your work (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 3 loops.

- when you get back to the start of the chain, turn and start down the other side of the chain, putting two stitches into the very first loop one at the end of the first row you made, and one at the start of the row along the other side of the chain.

At the point you should have a chain down the middle of two rows of crochet stitches.

Second row: Crochet on top of your first row, continuing around. Again, I used half-double crochet, but any crochet stitch will work.
Third row: Crochet on top of your second row.
Continue around and around.

You are building a pocket, with the chain you started with as the base seam.

Tips:
-one stitch on top of each stitch; don’t put an extra stitch at the end as you did in the first row.
-I think it looks better if you pick up both “top yarns” or loops in each stitch; in other words, each stitch completely on top of the corresponding stitch in the row below - not just picking up the front or back loop. So that would mean that my “half double crochet”… is now…. Yarn over the hook, insert the hook into the next stitch (through both front & back loops in the given stitch), yarn over again, pull through your work (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 3 loops.
- At each side of the piece, the stitches tend to “roll in.” Take care to grab both of the top loops.

Is the pouch turning out the way you want it? One picture shows a pouch that seems too big. So I rip it out & start again. I want a loose fit, but not a lot of space on either side. The other picture shows a comfortable fit.

Be confident enough to rip it out and start again!

Round and around.
Even if your cat is sitting in your photo spot.

- Continue around until your phone can be completely contained in the pouch.
- Pause just before the middle of one side of the pouch.
- Chain two, and skip one stitch.
- Crochet in the next stitch & continue crocheting in each stitch until you are at the middle of the other side.

- Chain the approximate length of the depth of your bag, plus about 2 inches. This will be the leash to hold the phone pouch, and allow you to pull the phone out of your bag.
- Slip stitch back into the chain a few times to make a strong loop at the end of the chain.
- Cut the yarn and tie off.

- Work in the ends, either with your yarn needle or your hook.
- Thread the leash through the keyhole. This will hold the pouch closed and keep the phone in, but easily move to the side when you want to remove the phone from the pouch.
- Wrap the leash around your bag strap, and put the pouch through the hole at the end of the leash.

Now, when you want your phone, pull the leash to retrieve it from the depths of your bag!!
