Phone Case

Phones are a crucial and essential of most students' lives nowadays. In school, I see many people who glued their eyes to their phones. Due to the necessity that many students feel to have their phones at all times, I have decided to focus on phones. Since students always carry their phone with them, I wanted to design a phone case that can carry many important items like their school ID, money, drivers license, small notes, small documents, and many more. On top of that, I want to design a phone case that is also more durable, more comfortable, and more protective of the phone that most existing phone cases.

Supplies

  • Fusion 360 (for 3D modeling)
  • iPhone 13 (to make the phone case a reasonable size)
  • 3D printer (for printing)

Problems

  1. Many students have a tendency of forgetting to bring things like their school ID to school.
  2. American smartphone owners break 2 phone screens per second.

Inspiration

I took inspiration from wallet phone cases and phone cases with stands.

Planning

  1. I plan to make a simple, hard, and strong case where the phone would be placed in as the base.
  2. On the back of it, there will be a thicker back pocket.
  3. Then, I plan to add to add a wallet-like component to it on the left, which would be more soft, bendable, and thin.
  4. One side (cover) would have nothing on it as its main purpose is to protect the screen of the phone and keep the screen clean.
  5. The other side (inner) would have 2 pockets for cards, money, or other small items along with another stand (horizontal) that the user could use to make the phone stand on its own horizontally.

Design

I created the structure and model of the phone case through the Design tab on Fusion 360.

  • Cover (red)
  • Case (yellow)
  • Connector (blue)
  • 2 inner pockets (green)
  • Back pocket (green)
  • Stand (white)

(Not actual colors of the phone case, just for demonstration purposes)

Render

I added renders to the phone case model through the Render tab of Fusion 360.

  • Yellow - Hard Rubber for the case
  • Red - Soft Rubber for the cover
  • Green - Soft Rubber for the pockets
  • Blue - Soft Rubber for the connector
  • White - Aluminum Polished for the stand

(Not actual colors of the phone case, just for demonstration purposes)

Animations

I added animations to my phone case model to show it in use.

  1. Picture 1 shows the phone case model closed
  2. Picture 2 shows the phone case stand being used (horizontally)
  3. Picture 3 shows the phone case stand being used (vertically)

Improvements

  1. If I had more time, I would make the width of the phone cover wider, so that I add an extra pocket in the width of the cover for students who have bigger/longer items. (picture #1)
  2. I would also try to find a way to make the connector and cover detachable for students who want their phone case to me thinner and don't need the extra storage and stand for the time being. (picture #2)

Conclusion

Overall, I was happy with the product that I have made. This is my first time creating my own product using Fusion 360. The process was long and tiring, but it was worth it at the end. I am glad that I was able to turn one of my ideas into reality. This project made me more interested in competing in future competitions and doing 3D modeling.
