Pesticides That Only Work Against Pests (Harmless to Humans)

aphids.jpg
Aphids are a common pest in gardens. These soft-bodied arthropods may be green, yellow, black, brown or red in color, depending on the species. They are typically wingless, feed in groups and will be found on the stems and leaves of plants. Some aphids have a waxy or white substance on their body. All aphids can be distinguished from other insects by the pair of tubes, known as cornicles, that protrude from the back side of their bodies. They harm the plants by drawing out nutrients and the plant can drop leaves or even die if not taken care of.
Following are some of the methods I am using for the last 4 or 5 years on my small balcony garden. I have never used anything chemical all these years.

Dish Washing Liquid

Science: The aphids have a very delicate skin. And if they don't feal at home they will leave.

Ingredients:
Dish wash Liquid
Spray bottle
Water

Method:
Add around 10 drops of dish wash liquid in a spray bottle (ok few more drops).
Fill it with wate.
Tighten the lid and shake well

Spray this liquid generously on your plant. Dont forget to spray on the underside and in and around branches. Our main aim is to cover the plant totally with the liquid.

The dish washing liquids really kill 99.9% bacteria (as they promise in the commercials)

Note: This you have to do atleast for a fortnight every alternate days. This is to make sure that the young aphids that hatch will be handeled as well.

Holy Basil

Grow holy basil in and around your plants. Holy basil releases a very pungent odur that any kind of insects can not withstand
You can have 1 large shrub for an area of 4 feet x 4 feet area. If you have a friend who have holy basil in their house. Just collect the dry flowers crush them and you will find small black seeds. Just spread thesae seeds around your plants and you are done. Within a week or so you can have around 15 to 20 small basil seedlings. Replant or keep them as they are. No aphids will come close to your plants.

Garlic Shoots

Grow garlic in and around your plants. Garlic releases a very pungent odur that any kind of insects (even some humans and zombies) can not withstand. Just break some cloves (keep the skin on) from the garlic bought from shopping mall and plant them around 1 feet apart and you are done. Within a week small shoots will emerge. No aphids will come close to your plants.
Fun part: When the shoots are around 1 feet high, cut them and grind them with celantro and tomato to make pesto sauce.

Neem Tea

If you can get hold of neem leaves. Just dry them in the sun. Grind them into powder and store them in a dry sealed container. When required just boil a tea spoon of the powder in a liter of water covered for around 20 minutes. Cool the solution and spray on the plant thoroughly.
You can also consume the tea yourself! But that is not advisible for the bitterness. The tea purifies the blood and a good remedy for acne.

These are the few steps that I have tried on a regular basis to get rid of pests without any harmful effects.
