Pentabank Money Organizer

We all learn at some point in our lives the value of money and the importance of saving it. We need money for groceries, a place to live, bills, education, and more. Although currency is becoming increasingly more spendable without the use of physical money such as physical and electronic debit or credit cards, these resources are not the most dependable for saving money for important things. It is possible that physical currency cards can be lost and that electronic cards can become inaccessible. Also, consumers tend to spend up to 83% more when using a card versus cash making it less likely that they will save money when using a card. Therefore, most people save cash in person for emergencies. Now for the big question: where do people store this money? My first thought was a traditional piggy bank, but those tend to be considered childish and aren't practical when it comes to retrieving the money. Next, I thought of safes, but that seemed like overkill for saving money that will be used for daily necessities such as groceries or transportation. That is when I realized that because there are very few options for simple money organization, it would be extremely useful to have a product that could separate bills and coins by their value or could organize and save money for different occasions.
Through this instructable, I will show you the process I used to complete the design for a multi-compartment, modern take on the classic piggy bank.
Supplies
- Autodesk Fusion 360
- Pencil and paper
Market Research

There are very few options available on the market for physical money organization in the form of a container that can hold both bills and coins. Most of the products available either only have one compartment, have a childish or tacky aesthetic, or retrieving money from inside is unnecessarily strenuous.
Inspiration

My next step was to decide how I wanted to approach my design. In order to do this, I took inspiration from some of the products I found during my market research for the functionality of the design. Then, for the aesthetic, I wanted to make it simple and minimalistic so that it could be a product used by people of all ages, no matter their preferences.
Sketches

I started sketching my thoughts for the design out using a pencil and paper. At first, my sketches were very rough and I wrote many notes to document and refine all of my ideas. Once I had a rough but complete idea of what I wanted the product to look like, I made a more final draft that clearly showed what kind of features I wanted the design to have.

I used my final sketch to begin creating a basic design for my product. This design simply was to finalize the size, shape, and components of the product including the base structure and the multiple compartments.
Refine Design

After having a basic design for my product, I refined it by adding small details and showcasing its functionality. To do this, I added knobs to each of the surrounding bill compartments and the coin compartment on the bottom. Then, I made these parts removable by sliding them out.
Finalizing Design

For my final step, I sought to complete my design by implementing the aesthetic inspiration I previously found. I finalized this design by adding textures and materials to best convey the final product to customers.

These images showcase each of the compartments removed from the base of the design as well as a closer look at the bill and coin slots.
Although this design is simple, I believe that it serves the purposes I wanted it to extremely well. It breaks out of the childish and impractical mold set by traditional piggy banks while giving consumers a fresh way to organize their money. I am extremely pleased with the concept and look of the design, but also think it would be beneficial to explore strengthening its security and discreetness as money is something that needs to be kept safe and secure.
