Eventually, tomato cages turn rusty and harm the tomato branches. Instead of throwing them out, you can make a garden trellis for peas or other climbing plants with them.

Supplies

Wire cutters, needle-nosed pliers, tomato cages

Cutting the Cages

On one side, approximately in the middle of two of the vertical wires, score all the horizontal wires all the way around with wire cutters. Then bend the wire at the joint. It usually breaks on the first bend.

Straighten the cage so it is more or less flat. With the needle-nosed pliers, bend one end of the top horizontal wire into a hook, pointing upwards. Bend the other side of the same horizontal wire into a hook going sideways. It doesn't matter which side.

When placing them in your garden, push the prongs of the first unit into the dirt. Push the prongs of the second unit into the dirt so that there is a little gap between the hooks. You can easily pull it over and hook them together. Alternate upward pointing hook to sideways hook. Continue with the rest of the units.
