DIY: my own handmade extra large paper plane
Learn how to make an airplane.
This is what you need:
- Cadapac/ Cartone plume (70 - 80 cm)
- Balsa wood (10 - 50 cm)
- Glue gun, utility knife, scissor, ruler, sandpaper
- Aluminium sheet (10 -10 cm)
- Tape
- Screw
- Paint (color: white ), paint brush

Leer hier hoe je een relatief eenvoudig groot papieren vliegertje kan maken!
In het kader van de lessen Industrieel Ontwerp (ontwerp en vormstudie) maakten we een vliegtuigje die ofwel lang of ver moest vliegen. Dit vliegertje heeft als doel ver te vliegen maar dit hangt natuurlijk af van hoe je het gooit en hoe je de staart afstelt. Alvast veel plezier met knutselen en met vliegeren!
Basic Form
Cut the Cadapac in the proper shape.
You can find the correct dimensions on the picture above.
Make a First Incision
You have to make an incision in the top-layer of the wing (you may not cut through the Cadapac)
Make the incision in the middle so you can fold the wing double.
On the same side, make the incisions for the side flaps.
At the same time you cut out the small triangle at the bottom.
Make the Second Incision
Make two incisions on the other side of the wing
Use the dimensions as you can see on the second picture.
Constructing the Nose of the Airplane
Cut out of the remaining Cadapac the nose of the aircraft
You can find the dimensions on the picture above.
Incisions in the Nose
As you can see on the picture with the dimensions, you need to make one incision at one side
and 2 more incisions at the other side of the nose.
Use the Glue Gun
Use the glue gun to fill the folds and do not spill.
Set the Plane Together
Stick the peak of the plane at the bottom of the wings, make sure there is an overlap of about 5 cm.
Make sure everything is well joined!
Make the Balsa Plate
Draw the shape of the tip of the plane on the balsa wood.
Make sure the plate is as long as necessary (from the top till the wing).
Abrade the edges of the wood and create a nice rounding.
Fasten the Wood
Glue the balsa wood on the plane.
The Vertical Tail
Use the small triangle from step 2 to create the tail of the plane.
In fact the tail consists out of 2 triangles (shown in the first picture).
At the intersection of the two triangles, you make an incision.
Attach the Tail
Glue the tail on the wing of the airplane.
Side Flaps
Fold the side flaps up and fill the gap with glue.
Paint
Paint the balsa wood in white.
Make the Nose Stronger
Put the nose of the aircraft on the aluminum and draw the shape of the triangle.
On each side of the triangle you need an additional space of 3 cm. At the nose you will only need a thin strip to tuck.
Fold the aluminium in the right shape to match the nose.
Attach the Aluminium Top
Tie the tape around the aluminium top.
With the aluminium top, the airplane is more protected and you have already more weight in front.
Decorate Your Plane
The decoration of the plane has 2 functions.
It makes you plane more pretty.
It protects the plane from cracks in the Cadapac.
Of course you can choose the colors that you want.
Bring Your Plane in Balance
To balance the plane you probably need to add extra weight at the front.
I had to use a screw in the nose of the plane.
