Typically, a phone mount can run you anywhere from $40 to $100.

In this DIY, you'll learn how to make one for under $15.

What You'll Need

  • 2 oversized binder clips
  • 3 hair bands (or rubber bands)
  • 1 can of liquid rubber
  • pliers

Optional: Knife, vice clamps

Curve Handle Ends

The handles will be used to secure the phone, so the end of each will need to be curved in roughly 45 degrees at the narrowest point. I remove the handles from the clamping piece to get a better grip. The gauge of the wire for the oversized binder clips makes it difficult to bend. Clamps help with this, but en lieu of clamps, a pair of pliers and a place on the floor to prop against will do.

You may find that the hooked ends of the handles that connect to the paper clamping piece twist out. Make sure to bend/twist them back down so they fit back into the clamping piece.

This preps the curved handle ends for the next step.

Coat Curved Handle Ends and Clamp End in Liquid Rubber

You'll want to coat the curved handle ends on one binder clip and the clamp end of the other. Make sure to cover the inside of the clamp thoroughly, as this side will make contact with the bar the phone is being mounted to. Two coatings is ideal for each.

Apply Hair Bands

The hair bands serve two purposes:

  1. Keep handle ends of each binder clip from separating
  2. Secure the pieces together once assembled (Note band around clamp in Image #1)

You'll want to make sure they're tight.

Assemble Pieces

Assembly happens in 3 steps:

  1. Apply binder clip with rubber-coated clamp to bar
  2. Turn second binder clip with curved handles 90 degrees and clamp around handles of first binder clip
  3. Spread curved handles and make sure phone fits in firm. Apply more loops to hair band as needed.

That's it!
