Paper Quilled Figurine | Stormtrooper (Star Wars)

cover.jpg

When we talk about outer space, all I can think about is the Star Wars franchise. I haven't watched all the series, but this franchise is such a legend. Among all the Star Wars characters, Stormtrooper is my favorite one! I believe that many people love this character as well. So, I decided to try to make the Stormtrooper from paper quilling and I choose a silly pose instead of a Stormtrooper holding a weapon :D.

I hope this instructable can be very usefull for many Stormtrooper fans out there! You can keep it for yourself, or you can give it to a Stormtrooper fan you know. Let's have some fun! :D

Supplies

In this project I used:

  • Paper: Black (80 gsm) and white (100 gsm)
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • PVA glue
  • Cutter
  • Ruler
  • Quilling mold
  • Regular paper hole puncher

First thing first, cut the black paper into strips. I used a paper shredder to speed up the process, and the result was paper strips with 0.4 cm in width. Roll the strip to make a tight coil until the coil reaches 2 cm in diameter, secure the tip with a little glue. Make two of them. Then secure the coils shape by applying some glue to them.

Cut a rectangle shape from the black paper as you can see in the picture. Use this rectangle as a cover and the coils to make a cylindrical object.

Cut a rectangle shape from the white paper and turn it into the shape as you can see in the picture to make the Stormtrooper vest. Add a pair of small paper strips as you can see in the last two pictures.

The Hip: Make another black tight coil 1.5 cm in diameter. Cut the white paper into the shape as shown in the picture to make the pants. Glue them together. Add some details by cutting some rectengular shapes from white paper then glue them to the hip.

The Legs: The basic method to make the thigh and the calf is the same as the cylindrical object of the body part. The diameter I used for the tight coils of the thigh was 0.8 cm and the diameter of the tight coils of the calf was 0.5 cm. Don't forget to cut a rectangle to coverl the cylinder. Each thigh and calf are 2 cm long. Then roll another black paper strips into 0.5 cm in diameter of tight coil to make the knee.

Define the pose of the legs that you want. You can make them basic straight, or try a different pose between the right leg and the left one as I did. But please noted that the straight pose of the legs will make the Stormtrooper stand more firmly. After that glue the thigh, calf, and knee together.

Make another tight coil using white paper strips and attach it under the calf. Then cut hexagonal shape from white paper as you can see in the picture to cover the thigh and calf. After that cut a small pentagon shape to cover the knee.

The Shoes: The shoes are made by rolling 0.4 paper strips into a 0.5 cm in diameter of tight coil. Then, push the center of the coil to make a dome shape. You can use the help of small straw or even the eraser tip of your pencil. Secure the dome by adding some glue to the inner part of the dome. Cover the dome using 0.4 width black paper strip. Glue it under the white tight coil from the previous step.

Glue the hip and the legs. Actually for me, this was the hardest part, because the pose of the legs was skewed and the glue did not dry quickly, so the legs was not really firm at first. I solved this problem by adding some crumpled paper in small size to support the attachment point of the hip and the leg if that make sense. That's why I suggest you if you did not want to face such hard time, use straight pose for the legs.

The making of the arms is quite the same to the legs. I only made the upper arm and the forearm, each of them are 2 cm long. Then joint them together. I covered the upper arm using 0.4 cm width white paper strip, then I cut a bit long dome shape to cover the shoulder. After that cut a polygonal shape from white paper to cover the forearm.

Roll the 0.4 cm width black paper strips to make the hand. The size of the tight coil was 1 cm in diameter. Pinch the coil to make an oval shape, then push the center a bit to make a little dome effect. Glue the coil to secure the shape. After that, attach the hand to the arms.

Cut the white paper into 0.2 cm width paper strips. Roll the strip to make a tight coil in the diameter of 1.5 cm. Use the quilling mold to shape the coil into a dome. Secure the dome by adding some glue, wait until dry. Cut another white paper strips with 0.4 cm in width. Make two tight coils, one almost the same diameter size as the dome, and the other one has a bit bigger size in diameter. This is to make a stacked level of head size of the Stormtooper. After that cut a rectangle from white paper to make the face.

Cut a strip of 0.2 cm in width of black paper, then glu it on the forehead. I made the eyes using a hole pucher to help me cut a circle frome the black paper, then cut it into half. You can cut it manually to mimic the actual shape of the Stormtrooper's eyes. Glue them on the face.

To make the embossed part on the jaw, I made a coil/cylindrical object using 1 cm width paper strip and the smaller one is 0.5 cm width paper strip. To add more detail I cut the black paper into a wide "W-like shape" and glue it on the lips area of the face.

Assembling

Now we are ready to assemble all the parts. Don't forget to prepare a base for this figurine. You can either use a cardboard, plastic, or even a large paper tight coil. I used a plastic for the base.

To joint the head and the body, I made a black tight coil to perform as a neck. The size was 1 cm in diameter. Then glue the neck to the upper body, and now glue the head to the neck. Then you can move to gluing down the arms to the body.

Before I joint the upper body to the lower body, I made sure the lower body can stand properly on the base and secure it with glue. You can use a hot glue to stick the shoes to the base because I think a hot glue can stick stronger. The final part is gluing the upper body and the lower body.

Now you have your own Stormtrooper figurine. Enjoy!
