Paper Forms Project
The readings definitely helped me in getting started with the assignment and shaped my design process in many different ways. The chapter about how to define a perfect net, really helped me get started and emphasized a strong design foundation will result in a more hardy structural form. The chapter specified that highly detailed and a precise method is necessary for success. I think this suggestion really helped me slow down my process and take my time, I carefully measured every line to make sure everything would add up. I was super inspired by the reading on the tabs and lockings, and at first intended to do something like this, but in full honesty, I was a little overworked in fusion and wanted to move on. Lastly, the chapter Creating with the System really taught me that it is less about the technicality and more about the experimentation. At some point I was less concerned with how it was going to come out, and just let myself get creative and overly ambitious, which will definitely be of benefit to me later as I continue to work in fusion and other platforms.
Supplies
I used a laser cutter, card-stock, fusion, tape, and adobe illustrator
Look at Inspo
While searching for what to do, I really liked this idea of stacked shapes. My original Idea was a little ambitious for a beginner at fusion, I wanted to do like a 3d spiral, but quickly moved on from this idea as I was starting to sketch out my design.
Sketch Out Design
I did lots of sketches and lots of simplification and modification. My design changed many times, and evolved in many different ways.
Fusion Work
I then took my designed to fusion and started workshopping. Then extruded my design.
Export Out of Fusion Into Adobe
I added scoring lines and made some last minute edits in adobe illustrator.
Laser Cutting
Made an appointment and learned how to laser cut! I had so much fun with this step watching the laser cutter work. However, I did run into some design problems when attempting to put my form together. I tried to tape from the inside but it was so tedious and I couldn't access a lot of the areas because my design ended up being a lot small than initially anticipated. But overall I would say it was a great learning experience, and next time I probably won't go so ambitious. I think next time I would like to improve on the neatness, this is not anything like what my normal work would look like, I am a very detail oriented and neat creator, I think I just got a little frustrated working with the little pieces.
