I made a paper model of the Dragon Trail Racetrack in Croatia because I enjoy racing, and it is one of my favorite tracks, so I know the layout well.

Supplies

For this Project I used:

  • black tri-fold board
  • yellow, white, blue and green cardstock sheets
  • pair of scissors
  • pen or pencil
  • yellow paint marker
  • some tiny racecars
  • paint brush and black paint
  • tape glue runner

Track Outline

For the first step you need to have six white cardstock sheets to draw the outline of the track on with the pen the wider parts being around 4cm wide, the skinniest parts being 2cm wide and the rest of the track being about 3cm wide using a printed map of the track for reference. After the track has been traced use the scissors to cut out the track.

Painting Track

After the track has been cut out use the black paint and the brush to paint the track using one or two coats.

Elevation Pt1

Using any colored paper and the scissors cut out a piece of cardstock about 3.5in x 11in folding each side in one cm so that it is one cm off the ground repeat with a white piece 4in x 10.5in. With a 4.25in x 11in and a 5in x 11in blue pieces of cardstock fold each piece's sides so that each side is 1.5cm of the ground. With a piece of cardstock white that is 4.25in x 10.125in fold each side 2cm in so that it is elevated 2cm off the ground. when folding make sure to make a diagonal cut in the corner so that it folds better.

Pit Stop

Use the yellow paint marker to make the 10 pit boxes about 1cm x 1.7cm.

Grass

FK2_0591.JPG

To make the grass use the green cardstock and the tape glue runner to attach it to the tri-fold board and cut it to the appropriate size on the edges.

Elevation Pt2

FK2_0592.JPG

For covering the elevations from earlier use, the scissors and cardstock. Cut the green cardstock to the size at which it can fully cover the first hill made and make sure it's sides can fold down diagonally and touch the grass use the tape glue runner to attach it. for the third and fourth hills cover them with a yellow piece but leave a 1in gap between them underneath the cardstock. The fifth hill should be covered with green.

Laying Down the Track

The track pieces and pit road should then be attached to the grass and hills with the glue tape runner make the entire edge of each track piece is covered in tape glue.

Pit Stalls

The pit stalls are made by folding 1.5cm x 3.7cm white cardstock so that it has a short wall and an overhang.

The final step is to add the cars. I used these cars from aboard game I have called Formula D. Place the cars wherever you think they look cool I also added maintenance and pace cars.
