Paper Cutter
Paper cutter, also known as a paper trimmer, is a simple tool that is used to cut through paper precisely and accurately.
I got the idea of making this project from the left over materials from my previous projects. Scraps are the basic building blocks for my projects.
For this project I collected the following left over materials/ paper cuttings from my previous projects:
Graph paper from The Pythagoras Theorem Model Project:

Electrical wire Casing/duct from The CNC Plotter project:

Materials and Tools Needed
· Ivory A3 Paper sheet
· Cardboard sheet
· Sharpener blade
· Screws
· Glue
· Graph paper
· Electrical wire Casing/duct
· Transparent tape
· A4 White paper Sheets
· PVC piece
Tools
· Mini hacksaw
· Steel 2nd cut Flat file
· Measuring tape/ scale
· Vernier Caliper Digital
· Paper cutting blade
· Drill machine/ Screwdriver
Construction
Cut a cardboard sheet of size 24cm X 32cm from the raw cardboard sheet. Cover it with ivory A3 paper sheet with the help of glue.
Scales
Cut paper strips from the graph paper sheet and make two strips of sizes 20cm X 2cm and 28 cm X 2cm.
These two strips act as scales as I used in my previous project Pythagoras Theorem Model. Do markings on them with pen.
The Scale having dimension 2cm X 20cm made thick by pasting a strip of ivory sheet as it act as guide for the paper to be cut.
Paste the transparent tape on each scale so that the markings do not become fade. Paste both scales on the cardboard sheet (90⁰ angles between them) with the help of glue.
Graph Paper Sheet
Now take a graph paper sheet of size 23cm X 19cm. Draw different paper sizes markings on this graph paper. Paste this graph paper on the cardboard.
Different paper sizes:
A5 14.8 × 21 cm
A6 10.5 × 14.8 cm
A7 7.4 × 10.5 cm
A8 5.2 × 7.4 cm
A9 3.7 × 5.2 cm
A10 2.6 × 3.7 cm
B5 17.6 × 25 cm
B6 12.5 × 17.6 cm
B7 8.8 × 12.5 cm
B8 6.2 × 8.8 cm
B9 4.4 × 6.2 cm
B10 3.1 × 4 cm
Cutter Mechanism
The cutter mechanism to cut paper consists of electrical casing/duct and a sharpener blade.
The casing/ duct consist of two parts i.e. upper part and the lower part. The upper part supports the cutting blade (Slider) and the lower part act as the sliding rail.
Cut the lower part of the casing/ duct of length 30cm. And the upper part length is 9cm.
Make two holes on right side of the upper part to support sharpener blade with the help of screws as shown in picture. The blade should be fixed at an angle in such a way that its sharpening edge cuts the paper.
Drill two holes (size 3mm) on both the ends of lower part at distance of 5mm from the each end.
Drill two holes on the top of the upper part of duct and on the PVC piece. The centre distance between the holes is 20mm.
Attach this PVC piece on the top of the upper part of duct with the help of screws.
This PVC piece of length 38.67mm act as handle/knob.
Assembling All Parts
Attach the cutter mechanism on the cardboard sheet with the help of screws. Please take care while handling sharp blade. That’s it. Now the paper cutter is ready to use.
Final Assembly
Working
This cutter cuts the paper when the slider pulls downwards.
Keep the slider on the top position then insert a paper below the sliding rail part.
Now pull the slider downwards with the help of handle/knob.
It’s working.
Benefits
Paper cutter is a common occurrence in offices and schools. These machines serve a large number of cutting and trimming work. Some of the benefits of using these machines include:
· Faster cutting, especially when you are trying to cut several pieces of same style at the same time.
· This machine has measurement feature that help in accurate and precise cutting.
· It makes the cutting process a lot easier and user friendly.
· This cutter is portable and can be practically taken anywhere.
