Paint By Number Masterpiece

Painting a beautiful picture can be intimidating and difficult if you don’t have any experience painting. That’s where a paint by numbers picture can be handy. These not only help you to learn how paint lays on the canvas, but can help you to build confidence in learning to paint. This kind of art is very soothing, calming, and can put you in somewhat of a meditative state. With the correct steps, you too can be on your way to making a work of art!

Supplies

Supplies:

  • Canvas with numbers
  • Completed reference picture
  • 3 paint brushes: small, medium, large
  • Jar for water
  • Paint pots with numbers
  • Old newspapers, towel, or tablecloth to lay canvas on
  • Paper Towel to wipe off excess paint
  • Small light (optional)

Step 1:

Clear an area where you have enough space to lay the canvas out. Cover that area with either old newspaper, a towel, or tablecloth. Lay the blank canvas down onto your workspace.

Step 2:

Get a mason jar and fill it half way full with water for rinsing your paint brushes. A small paper towel will be needed for wiping off the excess paint after rinsing your brush. This ensures the paint colors don’t mix, since the kit only comes with 3 brushes.

Step 3:

Gather your paint pots. Each paint pot has a number with a corresponding number on the canvas. It is recommended to start at the top of the canvas, with the larger areas that are easier to paint. Try to stick with the same number to cut down on times you rinse the brush.

Step 4:

When getting to the smaller areas, the numbers are harder to see. This is when I recommend getting a small light, like a book light that can allow you to see the numbers easier.

Step 5:

These smaller areas should only be attempted once you’ve had some practice painting the larger areas. Use the smallest paint brush for the more challenging areas.

Step 6:

If the colors seem too dark or saturated you can dilute them a little with your water.

Step 7:

After finishing you can give some creativity to the piece by adding some details yourself to make your painting unique.

Step 8:

This is what your painting should look like when you are done. If you desire you can frame it. For reference the canvas size is 16x20.
