Paint Up

We began our project with the idea of reducing waste, in this case makeup. Ingredients in makeup such as palm oil and the packaging itself are thrown away and wasted therefore increasing the amount of yearly pollution. There must be a way we could reduce this problem while using recycled material and not wasting the makeup, but how? That is why we created “paint up.” The project paint up is a way for users to turn their old makeup into lasting and colorful paint that not only would allow them to use the makeup item they bought to its full extent, but they would also be helping the planet.

Discovery Phase: In order to find out what our users needed in order to go forward with our project, we interviewed 6 users with a set of questions that would give us insight on their thoughts and ideas on how to create our project.

The questions asked were:

What do you do with your old or broken makeup?

Approximately, how much money do you spend on makeup per year?

Why do you stop using a makeup product?

What makes you regret buying a makeup item?

What encourages you to complete a task?

Interpretation Phase: During this phase, we took the answers we got from our user interviews and turned them into design drivers and constraints. The design drivers help us identify the users needs, while the design constraints are the problems we want to solve in our design. These will help us stay on track and design for our users

Ideation Phase: For this step, we sketched multiple possible designs that fit under our drivers and constraints. After this, we showed them to our users to see which ones they liked the most. With the answers we got, we then created a new and more elaborate sketch of our design. Which then got feedback from our users and got rated from 1/10 on both drivers and constraints. With this feedback, we re-sketched and improved our design. After that we once again got feedback from our users.

Prototype phase:

Supplies

Hand sanitizer

Old/broken Makeup products.

Putty container

Old/used spoon

Tape/hot glue

To begin, you must gather all of the materials which includes, old/broken powdered/pressed makeup products in colors you would like to use as paint, hand sanitizer, putty containers, old/used spoon, tape/hot glue and an old case.

Moving on, create a mixing spatula. To do this, we will need an old/used plastic spoon. The first step is to break off the round part of the spoon, you should also break that in half to the long way for better results. Then you need to break a small part of the stick of the spoon close to where the round part was. Lastly, you need hot glue/tape to rearrange the spoon. The small part should be connected to the round part of the spoon in a vertical position. Then, the longer part should be connected to the small part but in a horizontal position. The result should look like this. Make sure that your mixing spatula is strong enough to mix, if not, try to add more tape/hot glue.

Hands On!

Once you have all of your materials, start by picking one of your makeup items, take out a portion of the product, and place it on the old case.

Using the mixing spatula, begin to gently mix the makeup and sanitizer together. Do this as many times as needed until you get a smooth glossy consistency.
