Paint Storage/palette
I decided I wanted to make a laser cut box that I could use for paint storage, with a lid that could be used as a paint palette.
Ideation
Here is my original sketch, the parameters changed as the original size was way too big. I knew I wanted a divider to make two compartments for paint brushes and for paint. I wanted my lid to detach and have spots for paint, and for mixing paint. In my original ideation I wanted the box to be made out of wood and the lid to be made out of acrylic so that I could paint on It and easily wash it off.
Digital Design
I created my design using fusion. I made it as a press fit using finger joints to make the box fit really snug without needing any extra supplies to put it together. The harder thing to design was the lid because I had to try to figure out how to create a lid that would stay in place when on top of the box, but be easy to take off when I wanted to use it for paint. I ended up making a 2 layer design, the top layer sitting on top perfectly with holes and rectangles for the paint to go in, and the bottom layer being slightly smaller so that it extruded into the opening of box. When the pieces are glued together a lip is formed to make the lid stay in place.
Fabrication
I laser cut and assembled the wooden pieces for the box, and they fit perfectly together with the correct kerf settings. The divider that went inside the box didn't end up fitting on its own, probably because the press fit technique changed the inside of the boxes dimensions slightly, so I had to use some glue to keep that in place. In my original ideation I planned on using acrylic for the lid, but I was worried it would be slightly too small so I 3D printed the lid pieces instead.
Finishing
To finish off, I painted the pieces and made linoleum print making stamps to decorate the sides of the box. Im super happy with how my box turned out and I can't wait to use its palette, im a little bummed that the paint will probably stain the 3D printers filament but other than that I wouldn't change anything
