Paint Carousel Made From Empty Prusament Spools

Since I am passionate about 3D printing, over time I accumulate a not inconsiderable number of empty filament spools. I like to use Prusament filament and these spools consist of two plastic discs that are connected by a cardboard roll. Both the plastic disks and the cardboard roll can be used well for craft projects.

Since I started painting miniature figures some time ago, I had the idea to organize the many paint bottles. Thereby, the paint carousel has been created.

Supplies

Besides the Prusament spools and the 3D printed parts, the following components are needed:

  • 4 pcs. Ball bearing 608RS 8x22x7mm
  • 1 pc. M8 threaded rod, 385mm long
  • 2 pcs. M8 nut
  • 2 pcs. screw M3x9mm

Disassemble the Spool

When disassembling the spool keep in mind not to use to much force, otherwise the plastic parts could break. You have to pull it apart gradually.

Print the following quantities for a 4 level carousel:

4 pcs. carousel_spool_adapter

4 pcs. carousel_bottle_holder

3 pcs. carousel_distance_sleeve

1 pc. carousel_base

1 pc. carousel_upper_part

1 pc. carousel_lid

1 pc. carousel_handle

If you choose the correct orientation you need supports only for carousel_base and carousel_upper_part. I used PLA Filament and a layer height of 0.2mm.

The ball bearing is pressed into the adapter and holds without additional gluing. The adapter is glued into one of the Prusament discs with epoxy resin glue. The bottle holder is also glued to the spools disc. The carousel is clamped together with the threaded rod and the two nuts. The handle is attached to the lid using the two screws (a bit tricky). Finally, the lid is screwed on (at the first time the thread is a bit thight).
