Paddling Force Based Continuous Variable Transmission for Bicycle

Intro1.JPG

CVT in short for Continuous variable transmission is the type of transmission where gear ratio changes continuously which facilitates smooth transition between high torque low speed mode to low torque high speed mode. Such type of transmission is used in gearless non electric automobiles. In this instructable I designed a CVT for bicycle where the gear ratio for transmission changes according to effort needed to ride the bicycle.

Supplies

Model is designed on Blender 3D

BICYCLE CVT DESIGN /GEAR BOX WORKING

The gear system is designed using one movable and one non movable conical shapes pressing against each other with trapezoidal drive belt sandwitched inbetween. The position of the movable conical shape will change the gear ratio of the gear system as shown in figure. The movement of the movable conical shape of gear system is so designed that its position depends upon the force with which padal is pressed.

ADVANTAGES

BICYCLE CVT DESIGNED ON BLENDER

The major advantage of this new CVT for bicycle is that it automatically controls the gear ratio depending upon rider's effort in paddling, there by reducing cycling fatigue for long and short rides, as well as it will offer a smooth cycling experience.
